Jake puts the "Blue-Bonic Plague" on the strip

Post by MassIVe 79 Vert »

That's right....after driving 3450 miles in 5 days, Jake put old Blue on the drag strip this afternoon.

He pulled a 14.3 in the quarter with no injuries to him or old blue :D :D :D

Jake needs to put the car on a weigh scale as it went down the track to put that time into perspective. The track should have a scale. Jake?

I'm sure he had the car weighed at the track....not sure what it came in at though.

FYI, Jake isn't really trying to impress anyone with the drag strip time. As we all know, this 2270 kit was NOT designed for the strip and neither was the gearing in the car. He just wanted to show (once again) the reliability of the Type IV. After 3450 miles of hard cross-country driving in 5 days, he gave it hell down the quarter mile strip and still didn't need to put a wrench on the engine. He's much more concerned with that than his time :D

No one was getting weighed today.

The Plague is far from a drag car. Kafer Mike did make a last minute adjustment to Jake suspension which probablly gave him a big advantage. The shot front suspension was lifted by Mike to transfer weight to the rear. The Plague's suspension is totally shot. When lifted it creeks and stays suspended. The sagged torsion bars was another trick Jake used to optimize traction. It was noticable as he spun off the line and got sideways romping into second gear. Or was it that brand new left rear tire and worn right rear tire that gave him the traction advantage? No, it was the gearing -- why bother using 4th gear when you have a valve train that can rev to 7200

The plan is for T4 conversion cars to meet outside the gate at 8am so we can park together.

Great day at the show!!

I just finished pulling the "Type 4 Torquer" from the Plague and the new owner has it in his possession!

I'll post more details of the day later!

I weighed it yesterday morning....

1982 pounds without me, but with a 70 pound tool bag and about 20 pounds of other crap that I forgot to take out of the trunk. These things were not in the car when I ran it..... Only me and a damn near full tank of fuel.

I weigh 180. So I'd say the car weighed 2160-2190 pounds the way it hit the track. I still had some of my test crap in the car thats not easy to remove as well as a spare battery under the driver's side of the back seat that I forgot to remove before the run!

I was spinning clear through first and second gears and a tad in 3rd...

Everyone that saw the pass said the car was definately good for mid to high 13s with the belt removed and some more sticky tires, or with at least mine aired down. Unbelievably to me the super tall gears did really good in the 1/4 mile- I just didn't hit 4th gear!

If I would have done more runs I feel quite sure that I'd have seen 13s and met my goal for the strip, but I was more than happy that it just made it down the strip after 3450 miles and no maintenance. Hell I still had the high altitude jetting in the enginethat I installed in Denver!

The conditions in california are much better for fast times than we have back home. It was interesting to see this first hand having driven the car at home and all the way across country the effects the operating conditions had on the engine.

I'm happy, I really liked the 94 MPH speed more than the 14.3 :-)

Did you do the quarter with the 3.0 when it was in the plague?

The big advantage must have been the helmet

Pleasure to finally meet you and hang out a bit.
Hopfully you can make it out again some time.

Did you end up going out to dinner with Loren saturday night?

Yeah, me and that Maniac (LOL) went out for a big ole steak that was barely cooked!! Nice and bloody!

Thanks for letting me borow the helmet and dump my 400 pounds of extra gear in the trailer while I made my pass!

I wanted to say bye, but I was ready to get my ass back home!
