i started a good topic on cal-look about gettin hp out of my 1600 it discusses many differant setups. it is titled "freeing up hp in a stock 1600" i cant give you the link for some reason so you can just scearch it

Even a stock rebuild usually requires some machine work. Are you asking what can be done strictly with "bolt-on" modifications (no major surgery) or are you planning to tear the whole thing apart ? - that gives you the opportunity to change the camshaft and install slightly larger pistons (87mm)...if the case is going to need other machining anyway, it makes more sense to have it & the heads opened up for 90.5 or 94mm bore at the same time.
If the problem is that there's no local place qualified to do VW machinework, that can be done by mail.
