914 Trans Identification

Post by Ghia Nut »

Can any one tell me what VIN number tail shifts (NOT SIDE SHIFT) 914s come in. I have found one hidden in Alabama and might be purchasing it for use in my Ghia. Any help would be appretiated.

Thanks

Any car starting with 470, 471, or 472 would have originally had a tail-shift transmission in it. Those are the 70-72 model year cars. The 73+ cars should have had side-shifters in them originally. (Though Karmann would often put the "wrong" parts on cars at the beginning or the end of one model year...)

I have a 1.7 early 73 car with a tailshift trans the late 73 1.7 and the 2.0 were sideshift trans .The owners of these cars over time swap transmissions, as they fail, unless you know for sure that the trans is the one that came in the car the vin might not help you.
