type 4 engine in a squareback

Post by Multi69s »

I was wondering, what is does it take to put a type 4 engine in a 73 squareback. Mine is an automatic and I have a chance to get a good running 2L type 4 engine with air conditioning from an a bus with a automatic ($500). I have heard about bellows issues and the rear hanger, but what about exhaust and heater.

I am trying to build a very reliable car. It won't be a daily driver, but I will be taking it out of town occasionally and I need a little more umph to get over the mountain ranges in my area. I would also like to get the air conditioning working again so i thought the type 4 would be the best of both worlds. Temps in my area (San Juaquin Valey, CA) is over 100 deg in the summer.

Thanks for the input

I'm in the same boat. Read this:

http://www.tunacan.net/t4/tech/type3.shtml

I have a T4 1700 on hand right now as well as a engineless '73 Square/auto. Just not too sure about the fact I need to replace the IRS with a earlier set up to support the T4. I'd rather not dig into my T3's suspension.

There are SEVERAL folks who have done this on the type4um.
Looking foward to doing it myself in my Grandsons Square.

Other than the fresh air intake seal to the fan, and a little work on the rear hanger for a T4 bar, I understood it to be a relative drop in, (As engine swaps go) including more or less just working as far as the stock exhaust setup goes.

Check with Tom Notch, I think he has done several.

There are other, better ways to support the transmission if required...
Tuna was probably just being cautious for high power folk.

Early t4 powered busses only have support on either end, and Vanagons the same... Same for Porsche 914s... Don't see a problem.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
