I have started my wiring, and thought I would post a thread as I go through it. I am using a Universal Off Road harness (12 circuit and waterproof)) from Painless Performance. P/N 10140. The car has zero wires in it, so everything must be done as far as electrical. Here are some shots of the harness, and starting to pull it into the car.
I have almost all of the electrical parts I need with a few exceptions - radiator fans (don't have the radiator yet), horn, and reverse light. I will more than likely need more wire and connctors of different types, relays, and misc. other bits and pieces. I am estimating the wiring to take at least 40 hours of work. I want it to be a clean install, so I won't be cutting corners. A few weeknights and not every weekend means a long install...
Sorry for the slow updates... I have been dreading this part of the build for a while now. The Painless harness does not include any gauge wiring, you need to do that yourself. I have about 6 hours into the gauge wiring. Probably because I am not very good electrically... I will post some pics up tomorrow of what I have done. We actually lit up the dash lights tonight using a battery (just to test them). I should get into the Painless loom soon.
All of the common grounds, lights, and +12 volt leads to all the gauges are not included. The signal wires, the main voltage lead to the gauges are included in the Painless harness. Keep in mind this is a universal harness, so all individual situations cannot be covered. Maybe you need more realistic expectations when it comes to buying electrical harnesses...
There are some circuits in the Painless harness that I will not be able to use as listed or designed in their harness. An example is the fact that I am not using a GM, Ford, or Mopar ignition switch. This harness is set up to hook into one of those three very easily. Since my application is unique, there will be some design challenges to get around...
Skid, it is good to know about "what is" and "what is not" included in the kit, thanks. I downloaded the instructions and I am interested in the ignition set-up also. So let me know wizard when you get it hammered out.
One thing about all this electrical jazz is, it all adds up very fast. I just dropped $200.00 for toggles, a couple of indicators, and a horn. Speaking of horn, which one did you get? I ended up with the Hella Supertone.
Here are a couple shots of my crappy wiring. It will look better after I put the power braid on it... All of the gauges that came with my car had connectors already crimped on the light and power wires. Since I want the gauges removable (if necessary), I kept those connectors intact. It makes the loom look like crap, but again it will all get covered when I finish the wiring...
And yes, there are bare wires hanging loose in the picture... I have not hooked up the signal wires to any of the gauges yet since they are a part of the Painless harness. This is after finishing just the common grounds, lights, and +12v wires...
Tim - do I need help with posting pics?! C'mon dude... it's not like I haven't put up any pics on this site before...
