There's so many factors to consider that displacement alone is not the only criterium, but since that's what you asked I'll try to keep my answer relevant. I think it's better to build a smaller engine right than to have to cut corners to get a bigger one together; with no budget for headwork, carburetion, and a serious exhaust system I'd go with the 1775. It'll be OK with limited carb & exhaust but still respond to improvements down the road. A 1915 can be built for about the same money but will be stifled more by inadequate breathing, and it will not last as long. 1835 is a non-starter, they went out of style decades ago unless you're only after a grenade that's fun for the short time it'll last. It's all about cylinderwall thickness and how long they'll maintain a ring seal; 92s are inadequate, 94s are marginal, and 90.5s are nearly the same as stock - none can survive overheating without sustaining irreparable damage though.

depends if you want to spend money on some good dual carbs and a decent exhaust. also if you want to run heater boxes forget anything bigger then a 1776. if you spend the money on dual carbs like some 40IDF's or Dells and a bigger exhaust then i would build either the 1914 or 1776. put a smaller cam like a 110 or 120 that will give you a decent ride without head work and then save some extra money later, get some head work and you'll have a pretty quick ride.
