Need some help asap-No fire

Post by rickosuave1987 »

I am heading to the desert in a few hours and I cant get my baja to start. I started it this morning and it ran for a couple seconds then puttered out and died. I thought I had flooded it with the electric fuel pump so I shut it off and turned it over a few time-Nothing

So i thought maybe the coil to dist wire might be loose, nope. but When I turn the key to start the car there is no power coming out of the coil to the dist, took my test light to it while turning the key and no light.

It is a brand new coil. Any help would be great

Power comes to the coil terminal 15 from the ignition switch. Do you have power with the key on to terminsl15?
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

Terminal 1 at the coil should blink your test light with the engine spinning. If it does the coil is toast if not the points or electronic ignition are toast.

ricko let me pass something on to you that was passed on to me by my father and his father before him

Just because it's new does not mean its good

but seriously set your ohmmeter to 200 ohms and go across the coil terminals tell what you read

VWs have problems with condensers. They have a tendency to be there minute, working strong, then gone potty the next. When I was still using them I always carried a second set of points and several condensers.

From the book, Peterson’s Basic Ignition and Electrical Systems; "If you ask an electrical engineer what the condenser does in the ignitions system, you will get several answers, because the condenser does several things. Its primary purpose is to create a clean cutoff of current flow when the points open. Current that might arc across the space between the points finds the condenser a greater attraction and rushed into it to create an unbalanced condition. Without the condenser, induced current in the primary would flow across the point gap, bleeding off the energy at the coil resulting in no spark at the plug."

It goes on to talk about more condenser problems such as grounding problems with the system.

This is not to say that the condenser it the problem, but it is something that should be looked at. Lee

My opinion is worth slightly less than what you paid for it.
