Home Built - High Quality Wiring Loom - Pix Attached

Post by MNAirHead »

NOTE.. I did not build this loom.

These photos may help you with a custom build up.

Many of us have the choice of using a low end "buggy" kit or fabbing something custom.

Yes it does my only question is.Is It all hot wires running to the back or are you running positive and negative for each circuit back there?

Couple of mixed answers.

1-It is an engineering improvement to add a grounding bus to your car directly from the battery.

2-Some wires are postive (flashers, coil etc) .. while some switches turn on/off ground instead of hot (+).

To help clarify.. I'll post a question below.

Follow Up Clarification Question

I understand many "idiot light senders" are really breaking/sending ground.

Which wires (colors not necessary) send ground instead of switching on/off the positive lead?

Hope this helps Sierra.

yeah it really does.thats how we get away with running a single wire back there instead of + and -.

I have to fly but do have a suggested reading..

Grounding
About 3 months back there was a post talking about "grounding buss" it would be in electrical.

I don't want to be the idiot who posts "search button".. the smarter guys took great detail of some issues with ground and how adding a grounding bar could/would help you out.

Since there are only a few pages.. please check it and post the link to this thread... by far one of the more interesting improvements on the loom.

POSITION
There has been some discussion of improving where/how the wires actually go through the car.... do not limit your self to snaking through the traditional bug places. If this is not a restoration, there are some other options. In a phone discussion, Bob commented that it is not logical that the battery is on the opposite side of the car as the loom.

My thoughts exactly im running the loom down the passenger side and relocating the regulator over there as well.ok here is the grounding thread.Grounding Buss - CLICK HERE

1) The battery is located where it is so that the heavy cable run
to the starter is as short as it can be..

2) The only wire in the Main loom that sends an actual Ground signal
is the Oil sender.

The generator/alternator (Blu wire) sometimes sends a Ground
and (when charging) sends a +12V signal.

The Flasher relay sends a Ground (kind of) to the speedo indicator.

The Fuel sender sends a "quasi ground" to the Gauge.

For accessories, the Horn button sends a Ground.
The Interior light door switch sends a Ground.

For a "basic" wiring set-up schematic, I believe that Outback Motorsports have one of the better ones. It is easily "buildable", so to speak...

http://www.outbackmotors.com/wiring_101.htm

From another thread...

Best place I have found for SXL and GXL wire. Low minimum buys, great prices and even better customer service.

http://www.jmproducts.com/

From a previous Bob post...

Fuses 101

here is a rule of thumb that has never let me down ,it comes right out of our eletrical code books be it american or canadian

18/16 ga wire a 10 amp fuse
14ga wire a 15 amp fuse
12 ga wire a 20 amp fuse
10 ga wire a 30 amp fuse
8 ga wire a 40 amp fuse
6 ga wire a 60 amp fuse
these are maximum fuse sizes for each given wire and should not be eceeded for safety

Mostly comical... but some decent relay info here
