Can a Bosch AL82 (55A) be converted to 75A?
I need more current and a new 75A is in the high $ range of around $275+/-

I'm not quite positive..

Another route is to have one rebuilt.. cores are about $20.. rebuilding is about $125

Thanks, I have a 55A that quit on me.
I'll ask the local alternator/starter shop if they can perform a little magic.
Looks like dimensionally they are alike

I agree 100%
The shop I have in mind does work for the local VW gurus.
They can probably take my unit in exchange. Haven't seen many HO alternators on bugs.

Another route is an Autozone type place.

I've asked store managers.. they do not care what they get back for a core as long as it's a core... they also have a lifetime guarantee.

I haven't used them for dub parts.

I'll try them first. didn't think about that place. They are a pretty friendly bunch over there.
May get lucky.
I'll let you know.

please let us know your decision and how it works out..

Upgrading internally regulated alternators is a common discussion point.

Manny, prior to going watercooled I looked at higher output alternators... 75amp, 95amp, etc... It turned out all of them were a rewound stocker. Basically, places like vwparts.net get a stock alternator in and send it out to get rewound at the higher amperage.

I checked around at local alternator shops and quite a few said they could do it. After pricing out a new 55amp alternator and taking it in to get rewound was pretty darn close to one already done. If you already have the alt, that may save a few bucks though.

Has anyone ever loaded up a 75A alternator to over 55A and saw it??

I wonder if they are heavier wire/fewer turns and same turns ratio? Bigger diodes only?

Power is proportional to size, no?
