Engine Wiring

Post by jengels »

Anyone have tips on where to hookup the wiring for my engine? Just got my rebuilt 1600 dual port in my 1970 standard bug this weekend. When I bought the car it had no engine so I'm not sure where any of the wires go. It looks like it has a red wire, green wire, and black wire. There is also two other wires that come out of the harness. Thank you for any information that you may have.

Do you have the complete "loom" or does it look as if it's been cut/played with?

Will mirror to Electrical.

Thanks for posting - hoping this becomes your internet home.

Thanks for the reply MNAirHead. I don't think it has been played with. It looks as if the wires were cut short. I have a black loom and out of those come a total of 5 wires. 2 black ones at the very beginning and then at the end a red green and black one. Hope that helps.

Thank you,

John

Download the diagram here:
http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring.html

Get this one:
1970 1600 USA de Y
only the first part.

The Red and Grn are from the generator regulator under the back seat.
If you no longer have a generator, disregard these.
There may also be a thin Brw wire, which is Ground for the generator.

If you have an alternator, post back giving the type (internal or external
regulated) so that we can provide hookup info.

The harness should also have a thin Blu/Grn wire. This one goes to the
OIL sender on the engine.

The Blk wire is the live feed to the Coil (+).
All the connections related to that look like this:

I see there are is a wire going to the solenoid from the coil and another off the solenoid to the choke, but there is only a spot for one wire on the solenoid. How do I put two wires off the solenoid?

Thank you,

If the wires are small enough, crimp them into one barrel.

Otherwise:

I made a custom wire from two lengths of wire and three female connectors. One end of the short wire was the coil #15 terminal. One end of the long wire was the choke coil. The middle connector (solenoid) had the end of the two wires crimped into a single female connector.
