mine had a tree growing through it when i started. i read lots of forums, books and looked at pictures for ideals. the great thing bout a baja, unless your building a showcar, is you sand, paint and then throw some mud on it. some one told me to get it running first, then work on the body. your dad is right, it is good for the mind. your bug will always listen to you but they all have attitudes so you have to become their friend first.

pafree, welcome aboard, and I must say i like the way you think! and it's not just bugs, its VWs in general, if they don't like you their gonna chuck you from that saddle faster than you can say "Firiing order"
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Heh thanks for asking, sadly no, I am at school until this weekend (hopefully be home then anyway), haven't been home for the past few weekends so no work on my end aside from buying parts. Finally bought myself a repair manual, got some male spade adapters (already bought females), ordered a few things (lights, started another thread about that). Repair panel for front passenger floor arrived last week I think, which is GREAT because there's a huge hole where the pedals go! Oh yeah, fusername finally got a pedal cluster apart, glassbeaded it, and my dad painted it, so just needs reassembly.
Gonna need some sort of fiberglass...stuff, to fill in gaps when our patches don't quite fit the holes. Found some Bondo stuff (labelled for car panel repair, picture of a red car?) at Home Depot, also available at Napa apparently. Is this good? Anything better? Best for cheap?

Its kinda spendy, but the POR-15 floor and trunk repair kit is the best bang for your buck. It comes with the fiberglass mesh to patch holes in the pan and paint to paint the whole thing (2 coats)

From here it is about 150 shipped.

Holy crap monkeys
Thanks for the tip ricko, I'll be able to afford that in a few months heh when I'm done with everything else my car needs. I'm trying to put aside $160 for exhaust! My brain works in...like 1950-60s pricings, so that is more than "kinda" spendy to me. Maybe someday I will be able to afford that and make everything all purty like, but I think at that point I'll be saving up for another VW. =P
But thanks anyway

Some lights coming in this week, also got a trailer light converter thingamabob and a spool of wire.

After the first big snow last week...it's snowed again twice since. Also my car is currently jacked on the driver's side for easier access. It looks cute, but then again, it is a bug.

Fusername finished cutting out the floor there and fitted the new one, not attached yet obviously. Tried to get the damn steering wheel out, finally found what socket fit the nut in it (26mm), but need someone to hold the wheel while I try desperately to losen it. Fuser wanted the whole steering shaft out, but I couldn't find the blowtorch at the time (now I've found it, of course).

There's one...I have no idea where the other is. Fortunately, if it did get attacked by a plow, I live on a dead end and it should be at the end of the street. I hope to hell that didn't happen though.
Alright, so question time, because the search function hates me. The CVs have been removed, time for cleaning and painting. Figured I'd ask here for a quicker response, who knows where fuser is right now, not an easy guy to get hold of, easier now that he's not living in his 77 Westy anymore though. What gets cleaned and painted? Heh, it's all taken apart, I have the tube parts (driveaxles? axleshafts?), and the ends (CV joints? sorry, don't know the names for things) in separa bags, they're still covered in grease, I'm just not sure if I want to be attacking those with paint thinner or not, or just the tube parts. I assume so, and everything gets new grease... (got packs of grease coming within the next week or two)

On the CV joints, clean with a parts cleaner and inspect for anything broken, scored balls, etc. Then re-assemble with new grease and cv boots. Since you will be going through the effort, you might as well "clock" them when you put it together.

Nifty, thanks. Fusername has deemed them good, so time for cleaning and such.DonT wrote:On the CV joints, clean with a parts cleaner and inspect for anything broken, scored balls, etc. Then re-assemble with new grease and cv boots.
