Solid lifter problem...:(

Post by mads-kaa »

Hi folks

I ran into a little problem today. I am assembeling my 2.1 WBX converted for solid T1 lifters.
Today putting together the two halfs I had problems droping the lifters attempting to put the halves together. For preassembly the oil could hold the lifters with no problem, so I was quite surprised by this new problem. Finally I figured it would help if I held the lifter with my fingers and a magnet. I got the two halves put together and started torqing the nuts when I saw a small piece of metal lying in one of the lifters.

I checked it out and saw that the lifter had dropped the piece

Now my question is would it be safe to continue assembly and drive the engine or do I need to replace the lifter??

Since it's a lifter bought in the states it's going to be quite costly and timeconsuming to order a new one...

Mmm... did the lifter get dropped????

My concern would be if the material isnt great, then are they going to survive for long....

I have pulled a couple of engines apart and the (hydro's) lifters had chips and lumps and even the circlips were missing from a couple... no evidence of the bits though

Yes the lifter got dropped. One went to the floor but I don't know if thats the one that broke. I would suspect that material is allright but that if it has it's first crack it might have cracked in different places too... :?

the force at that point is not the biggest, but it's a small price to pay to get new lifter , compared to the cost after a breakdown

BTW here's a "tool" that can be used

I ordered new lifters at CSP, though it's only Scat they are proberbly alright for me...
And I also ordered the tool you show, so no more dropping lifters :D

I hope I will get the things before christmas.

I am not certain that lifters with a high ball seat can use the wire lifter retaining tool, you have to go lower technology.

Or a drop of heavy grease.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.
