If you were building a high performance WBX in trying to get 250-300hp and torque reliably, what would you put in it? Let's either supercharge it or turbocharge it.

How would you build it?

What size would you make it?

I think I would hypothetically think about using a subaru turbo motor..........

unless you have very deep pockets........
2.5L, small low pressure turbo (or poss a supercharger) big intercooler, megasquirt etc, big oil cooler, lightweight lifters... really its only a step up from what I want to biuld.. I want good solid reliable power and low end torque........ it would be quite easy to do a 10k mile engine, much harder to make it last 50k or 100k......... I want mine to do at least 50k before ANY work....... 75-100k would be much better........

Thanks for the suggestions.

Like many of the enthusiasts here who get a bee in their bonnet about something, I would like to explore what options exist for me in the VW watercooled family. I've considered the Scooby route but I like the idea of urinating up a rope at times

Any other suggestions for a WBX build up?

Street motor:
EFI, Eaton blower, intercooler, "small" bore long stroke.

OR

twin charged, using an Eaton blower and turbo with intercooler.

Type 4 main crank, maybe larger.
Dual plugs per cylinder.
Two injectors per cyl.

Water cooled helps control detonation.
Subi' motors have 5 main bearings, which would help long term reliability.

Where can I get info on the twin charger concept? I unfortunately don't have that kind of 'in' at work.

I would do a 76.4 x101.6 wasser.
Stock balanced crank.
good H beam rods.
101.6 dished pistons
custom sleeves.
headwork as you can afford.
mildish cam
pauter 1.3
14-30psi boost.
efi intercooled.
300-550hp+.

you don't need twin sparks or twin injctors.
bullet proof street engine.

That should get you started.
Definitely need an intercooler, and fuel injection.

Two injectors per cyl are easy to stage with megasquirt.
One injector handles low boost operation, the second comes
in as boost increases.

Two plugs per cyl, requires less advance to make power,
which reduces the likelihood of detonation.

GoWesty 96mm pistons, quality I-beam rods and stock crank 5 pins added. Type1 solid lifters with turbo cam. Flow benched heads w/larger valves no headgaskets.
1 5/8 exhaust hybrid turbo, large intercooler and programmable injection.
This can be accomplished with the stock or close to stock displacement with not much problem.
Keeping the bore smaller saves money and reliability at the head seal. My plan is to build this engine eventually.
Others here have boosted stock engines to 250hp. Good heads will allow you to do it with less boost.

NOt totaly hi performance but 300HP on E-85 at 15PSI

Stock crank and rods.'new rodbolts' (yes they take it)
Go westy 96mm forged wisecos/and cyl(even stock MV 94 will do)
mildly ported stock heads
web 86B on 112lobes + 29mm bigfoot wbx/type 4 lifters
T3/t4 hybrid turbo
megasquirt'n EDIS
Water to air intercooler

Why I-beam vs. H-beam rods?

That website is awesome! All those people touching calculators and wrenches at the same time...chilling.

Wouldn't a 1.5" system be 'better' for that size engine over a 1.625"?

Fastback,

Your setup is 'not totally high performance' like water (stock 160cc = 53hp) is to Vodka (you're at what 320+hp?).... please take your seat now.
