Sorry for the delay about the rod bolts.
The manual say's 45nm (33 ft lb) for pre 86, 22 ft lb + half turn for post 86.

how can i find out how old the engine is? i have the case number, and it has the later stat.

I would guess the difference is actually between stretch and non stretch bolts rather than the engine age.

It is a workshop manual in pdf format.
Got mine off ebay for £5 some while back.

coolio, i'll go with the early setting then.

cleaned valves and a bit of heads, hopefully finish em and do some lapping. also where the gaskets fit need a skim as they have some pitting.

The stretch rod bolts have a threaded portion about 22mm long. Do not use these bolts, at all, not new and especially not reused.

The "solid" or 1.9 bolts have threads about 13mm long. These are OK to reuse, torque to 45Nm (33ft.lb.).

How much are you intending to 'skim' off the heads?
You can't take too much off of they won't seal properly.
I had a badly corroded head years ago that I had sand blasted and then I filled it with liquid metal. Carried on sealing for years afterwards.

I have a couple of spare heads that have some bad pitting.
If I ever get some spare time I will get them sandblasted to see how bad they actually are.
I was tempted to get them welded but from what I gather the quality of the original heads are not that great with plenty of impurities.

finnaly putting heads together today and found a split in one of the pushrods, anybody have one spare or know where i can get a single one as opposed to a whole set?

You mean pushrod tubes or the pushrods?
You can get single pushrod tubes from gsf.
I've used a set of CSP spring loaded ones from machine 7 as they can be resealed without removing the heads.
Not cheap but seriously good quality.

i've been told that they leak, have you had any problems?
