Stearing wheel wobble

I have a 74 super beetle ( with steering gear box/ not rack and pinion) and the stearing wheel has gotten progressively sloppier over the years. It has a great deal of play in the up down motion. Any ideas as to what might cause this, and what I might do about it? Thanks in advance, Brian

there is a bushing in the top of the steering column, it is worn out on my ghia as well.
