I remain interested in knowing why the Euro products are even more expensive. Of course, they look great and, by all reports, perform great. But, geez, you've got to mortgage the farm to buy one. It could amount to over half the cost of a T4 build. Yikes!
A MSD dizzy costs about $250US. Great product. Which do you think costs more to manufacture - dizzy or exhaust?

Isn't stainless supposed to be an inferior material to use at the stubs?

Stainless is brittle, once it starts cracking it will continue to crack. Look at it as a long life corrosion resistant material. Another thing to consider is it transfers heat more than mild steel so a coating should be considered unless the stainless metal look is desired.
A-1 offers us the benefit of volume on a scale. The company supplies exhaust for more than the ACVW market and we benefit from the cost factor spread over their range of products.

When You consider the number of welds the exhaust is way more expensive from a labor perspective.
I do sanitary welding for a living (it is essentially the same as exhaust welding should be... complete penetration with no "bubble gum" on the inside) Each weld on SS 1" tubing is nearly 1/2 an hour of labor if you are doing several at once.
A union scale welder makes ~$25/hr with an average 10 welds per cyl.... you do the math and don't forget that most companies don't do charity work (add 50%-100% depending on overhead costs)

Just pricing out 1 3/4", 14 gauge 304 stainless tubing will surprise you!
You need about 16 feet for a typical exh...... $210 just for tubing!
Now, have someone laser cut 8 304 3/8ths" flanges, yes 8, you're
gonna use stubs right, you need 8.... can you get 8 for $50?
I you do, you are lucky...
How about the collector? Are you a good welder or you gonna have to
buy one premade? That's gonna set you back over $300!!!!
We are over $550 with no labor into actually making an exh system...
you know the bending part......where you make a bad bend and have
to throw the tubing in a big pile and start over.....

Ok, bad example. I stand corrected. However, I still think exhaust is way overpriced.
I'm thinking total material costs at less than $100 for someone in the business and labor at no more than 8 hours for a shop set up to do the work. I'm sure Don's figures are correct for a one off build, but the guys who are in the business ought to be doing much better. Perhaps certified union aircraft welders at Boeing Aircraft make $25/hr, but most welders don't.
And, boil it out the way you want, it remains a major deterrent to T4 growth. The real problem remains low volume. I always hope someone will find a better solution.
