decisions ?! flywheel or pulley trigger?
hey guys im about to machine my equalizer pulley with 36-1 trigger pattern on the top of it,,, then realized i could do the same on the flywheel and the whole thing would look so much cleaner.
Ive read a few threads on this but im getting more and more lost.
I have an ali autolinea case, and i was just gunna mount the sensor on the moldings that the case comes with that you drill out.
What trigger pattern do i need? and what are all the crucial dimensions for it? id just machine slots onto the back of the fly (seal side) just need to know how its usually done.
any help would be much appreciated.

Pattern is anything you choose, could be 60-2, 36-1, ect. You could also use an FI Beetle flywheel, and program your controller to read the pattern it already has.

ok im guessing it makes sense to make the voids and the teeth the same thickness. cheers man
speaking of which do i use A or B for the sensor? or does it make no difference?
is a at 45' and the other two at 10 or so? or am i imagining things?

Spot 'A' is where the sensor goes with the FI Beetle flyweel, if you machine your own it can go wherever you wish. There another guy on here who machined his own flywheel for a sensor, maybe someone else can find it?

I would rather go flywheel over pulley, I'm just afraid to see what a shop is going to charge to do it.

Re: decisions ?! flywheel or pulley trigger?
after several pulley setup i went "the trigger wheel machined in flywheel" way
a friend did the machining.
used the location for the stock vw sensor that is on the later cases and mounted the EDIS sensor there.
seems like a very steady setup and works great.
only issue for me was that the machinist thought the sensor was 45degrees off, but it is not fully 45 degrees ,so the timing it is 6 degress "off"
that is corrected in the meagsquirt ECU
(i'm running WBX though , but same sensorlocation)

cool! cheers guys i have been goorping over that pic for some time on another post!
yeah i just think and no offence intended that a trigger on the pulley looks messy as there are wires everywhere.
i have a really good guy to machine the bits and hes good on price, mainly because i have so much done through him.
il drill through the mounting hole and mark the fly. and have the missing tooth 90' from that place.
cheers guys thats some amazing replying!

FEC! theres no room on the fly to machine the trigger onto it. its been lightened heavily where the trigger would point onto the sensor.
im back to being on the front pulley.

here's a pic from fitting the EDIS sensor.

Those are lightened flywheels, not setup for crank fire.
That flywheel above that IS machined for crank fire looks great (seen pics of it floating around here and there). I'd love to do something like that on my car one of these days, but am afraid to see what the local machine shop would charge to do it, lol.

i'm fully aware of that. but just used as example that u can use a lightend flywheel as a core to machine trigger pattern in it.Eaallred wrote:Those are lightened flywheels, not setup for crank fire.
if it is the worry about lack of material/lack of strenght that worries the man.

thats funny ive only put that pic up now im sure? that fly is my mates that up till the other week was in my garage. i had his and mine balanced at the same time to get a bulk buy type thing. anyways yeah i too know there lightened as apposed to triggers but when theres no material there to machine then pressing in pick ups is ok but i want my car on the road asap lolEaallred wrote:Those are lightened flywheels, not setup for crank fire.

i think that fly cost around50£ to get machined.

There's someone else that's done one then. First I saw was a CAD rendering of it, pics followed.
Great minds I guess. lol. It looks to me like the best way to do crankfire.
