Rear wheel bearing puller

Post by Bugfuel »

Old stuff, probably no longer available?
If someone knows where to get these for type 1, let's hear it :D
This was from a Porsche dealer decades ago. Fits 356 and therefore VW type 1 as well.

Don't know if anyone will like this ... use the axle tube as the puller. Remove the nuts that hold the flange to the side of the trans. Use a regular puller that centers on the dimple in the axle, and use the outside fingers to grip the bearing carrier. Pull against the carrier and the bearing will be forced off the end of the axle. You, of course, must remove the entire brake backing plate and associated goodies.

What about IRS rear bearings. I pounded mine out, but in the processed ruin one bearing, and marred the bearing carrier.

Here is the Krebsfer 241A for the eight ball VW swing and gear reduction rear axle bearings, picked this one up over twenty five years ago at Kerr Automotive in OKC. Seen a couple show up on ebay, they are not cheap, but for the swing axles they do come in handy.

This is one that I made from flat stock, some threaded rod (with the end shaped on a grinder  ) and misc. nuts and bolts. It works great!! in reality, all one would need to do is fashion a couple legs for a standard 2 prong puller and you'd be in business.

Hey...I've been going to Kerr Automotive since I was driving a 411 in high school. I LOVE that place. Its the bomb! Best parts place I have ever seen.
I live outside of DC for the last two years. I get home 4-5 times a year and drop by for parts every time. Two years ago when I was living in Dallas...i still used to make weekend trips to OKC partly just to drop by and get parts. Best kept secret on the planet. Ray

Ever been in their storage building, it is the one to the east of the door you enter at, parking is between the two. Back in the early 80's it was a maze of some really cool stuff. That puller was on one of the shelves, in fact there were quite a few of them along with other goodies. Probably all gone now, but there was a time.

I am confused. Do you need a puller to remove rear inner wheel bearings on a irs beetle?

Yes! Actually back in the 80's.....that east building WAS the parts counter. I was in there in teh early 90's again at one point when they were searching out something. That place at times....is wonderland for parts. Truckloads and pallates just seem to appear sometimes. Ray
