Do you like to go fast? Well get out of that stocker and build a hipo motor for your VW. Come here to talk with others who like to drive fast.

Type 1 vs. Type 4

Hey, I got idea, give the motors to me. I can mess up an anvil with a rubber hammer. Blowing a couple of VW engines is not a problem-as long as my tranny holds out Image

james-the Goergia hick! hee-Haw. I'm going back out to the garage now-to take the Fuchs off my 63 and replace them with some white spoked wagen wheels. Then I'm firing up the torch -Can you say Baja?

It's been great reading this topic.
I was looking in running a type 4 but after reading all the post from people and how much harder it is to build one I?ve decided its not for me. I do think it would be a great daily driver motor but I don't drive mine that way it's more of a toy 5000 miles a year.
As far as Jake?s challenge I have a better one, my motor makes 5 time its stock hp; it has 20,000 miles with this combo 250hp about 30,000 miles in all.
Jake make one of your motors make 5x its stock hp, what's that about 450 to 500hp and drive it when ever you want and when the motor has to be worked on, tell us how many miles you have on it. I believe we can trust what you say.
If I could come down and see it I would but I have 3 kids and a wife so I have to work.

P.s. make the trip to MG I want to see one of your type 4 beast in person.

Ok everybody start giving me poop for writing this awful stuff.

What was your stock power. Even if it was a 40 horse that would mean you are making 200 HP for 20,000 miles. Are you sure about that? Maybe you are replacing rod bearings and main bearings and having the heads freshened every month or something. I would like to know what your engine comb is and what you are doing to make it go 20,000 miles if indeed it has 200 HP.

Type 1 vs. Type 4

Come on now, is all this bickering really necessary? Messages that have been edited so much that there isn't any text left? t1, t4, each has merits and flaws, nothing is perfect, right? Someone with enough money, experience, and time could build a drag t4 engine or a really reliable 200hp t1. That may not be the normal way to go about building up a Vdub engine, but when have Vdub owners been normal? I personally am putting a t4 engine in my Beetle because I know it is different than the run of the mill 1776 t1 engines that swamp all VW publications. I don't have enough money to build it up, it will just be the stock 1.7L 80 hp 914 engine with the DIY Joe Cali conversion, but for the same amount of dough that is all the hp I could get out of a 1776 anyway. Basically I have respect for anyone that owns an A/C Vdub, especially since there are about 2 still driven daily in my town in NJ (believe it or not I live in the most densly populated county in the most densly populated state too). Constructive critcism is great, and I think that engine blow is a good idea as well because both sides of the arguement can only learn from it, but everything else seems a little ridiculous.

-Chris

On a side note, does anyone know what size valves came in the 2.0L bus heads? Or where I can find out?

THERE IS NOTHING wrong with a type 1, except that it was a development of the 1930's and changed very little for all those years...

since "we americans" are afraid of it,

I do recall Porsche (aircooled) being among that very 1930's developement. It too had little change from what it was till now. It is just built bigger to suit a van full of hippies! (sorry T2ers)

The T1 motor had many many changes to accommidate it's general purpose. Get granny to the store or Lil Joey to school. I believe the T1 had progressed quite a bit and with most adventageous results.

The T4 has evolved as well. Not "that" much more than the T1.(not a motor to motor comparison) I feel the T4 is better suited for Buses than it's lil brother T1. That's an obvious fact, especially with it's massive bottom end. Although the T4 heads are questionable, I feel if it's properly ventilated and the vehicle in question is "not" over loaded, the T4 would have a better rap on head cracks. Typical stress.

I had a 65 Bus w/ a 1500SP and I beat the crap outta the damn thing. It lived a happy life and powered my non loaded T2 all over gods creation searching for Dub parts. I miss getting side ways leaving the local Pub, those V8 guys couldn't grasp that! Of course once into 3rd I pretended to tone it down....LOL. Power loss! T4 would have been trick.

I would build a T4 for a Baja driver or daily driver. I like the 2270cc w/ EFI, sounds promissing for everyday grunt and go.
Since I drive much like Bad62Bug I will enjoy the T1's awesome 2 stroke power band and neck snapping Revs. I think I understand now how a T4 works. Hard to assemble, parts are scarce, for now, and pricey for fast!

I'M NOT SCARED OF T4!
The only thing in the world that scares me is...Sitting at a stop light in my Bug....up rolls another neat VW.....light turns green.....we both launch and........I still see the VW!

I am closing this thread for none of the obvious reasons. This closing will free up Mr. Knuf's mailbox, and it won't take 2 minutes to open on my slow lines. If anybody wants to re-new the debate, so be it.

Hey Matt,

I've known Bad62Bug since 1995, since then he's had the same Berg 2110cc. I do recall only one tear down a while back. It was before or after his first CB Perf EFI Turbo set up. He did this because of posts on the internet stating the T1 bottom end wouldn't hold up. He sent the crank to be magnafluxed and checked for straightness...it was Fine! The motor was NOT in need of the rebuild, but didn't hurt to look.

He ran the CB kit for a couple seasons, then switched to DLI 2nd Generation Blower. Ran that for a season, now it's back to a new and improved CB EFI Turbo. The motor is in perfect condition with absolutely no signs of fatigue! Keeping in mind the same 2110cc motor was in another Bug since mid 80's as a semi daily driver.

He also beats it like he stole it too.
If it's built right, it'll last.

Hey, maybe we can get this engine test on "Jerry Springer"! We could call it " Engine Survivor" or something, sorta like
"Junkyard Wars" -Run those puppies "WFO" until one of 'em blows chunks!
"The Type 4 Fanatics" vs. "The Type 1 Terrors"

Okay, back down into the foxhole.... :-)
