Just try pulling a fuel line off without twisting as you do. The braided cotton covering works like a Chinese finger trap and tightens when it's pulled.
Yes, they work great when they are new and fresh. When they are not, they don't hold nearly as well. At that point the hose should be replaced, but too many people ignore them and let them deteriorate. Proper clamps are a nice insurance for the lazy or ignorant.
Do NOT use these garden hose type clamps:
Instead, use these in the proper size for the fuel hose in question:
The latter has an inner lip that covers the area just under the screw, so the entire ID of the clamp is smooth, and compresses the hose evenly. No sharp edges or holes that would cut into the hose.
agree. 5/16 fuel injection hose with the"9R" printed on the hose and the approprietly sized fuel injection clamps are good alternative to the factory setup [be careful, these clamps only cover a narrow range, the 5/16 clamp only fits 5/16 hose and corresponding metric equivelent size] don't use the 3/8 clamp on the 5/16 hose. {the guy at the auto parts store might not even know this} (found this out the hard way). The new fuel injection type of hose insulates better than the old type and is more tolerant of the new fuel {that invariably, contains alchohol}
To keep the line from fallig out of the carb: remove line, hone or drill the hole slightly larger. apply marine-tex epoxy to the line and reinstall. Adding the knurls would be good insurance.
NEBUGGERNATOR Welcome to the STF. Let's see your VW.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.
Thanks for the welcome. Don't quite have the bug yet but it is in the works. (just a '71 standard). Got alot of parts from my previous VW experiences and some pictures of my wrecked Ghia. {courtesy of a drunk driver}. Also know of a 72 super 'vert. that I cant afford but might be able to hook someone else up with. {that has more coin than I do}.
Oh well, not that crazy about the super convertible's anyway. Anyway, thanks for the welcome. Will post some pics when I can. May be to see what all you guys think of the prospective buys. Not east to find much aircooled stuff out here in Nebraska.

Errr - 5/16th inch hose is 7.9mm and VW fuel lines are 5.5mm. So i would suggest that 5/16ths is too big to get a tight seal, even with a good clamp.
Even 1/4inch (6.35mm) is a little large to get a good seal without squashing the hose some.

yeah 1/4 inch would be the closest of the "inch" sizes. I assume there would be some metric choices. I took the long way to say "use the correct size and make sure the clamps fit."
