My 2332 Turbo Baja Build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Car is looking great! Keep up the good work.
An 091 should work great for you. Might keep an eye out for a super diff for it though. The two stock spider gears are gonna be a weak point. Turbo motor + big tires = unhappy transaxle.
A super diff is pretty easy to install in an 091. Hardest part is getting the trans out of the car.

Don't you need special tools to install a super diff?

Yes and no. The only things you need are a dial gauge to make sure the backlash is set right, and a tool to unscrew the side covers that hold the carrier in place. Since the bell housing comes off, its eash to get in there and see whats going on.
I just made a down and dirty tool out of a piece of 1/4 plate and ground some notches in it that engage the splines on the covers and welded an old socket to it. It took about 20 minutes to make and worked pretty well. You can get a special tool, but its pretty easy to make one.

Before I took mine apart, I checked the backlash and marked the side covers. Then swapped out the diff and put it back so my marks lined up as they were before. Then I checked the backlash again and it was exactly the same as it was before.

I don't remember where he got them. I do know that he wasn't happy with the amount of camber he put in both sets of arms. When he ordered the 5x5s he wanted no camber. They had more then the 4x5 I have. I will find out where he got them and pm you if you would like. I'm not a fan of bad mouthing someone.

How have you guys setup your e-brake with longer arms? I have read bad things about using the inline brake locks. What are your thoughts?

Had a park lok on mine some years ago. They don't hold for very long, bleed off pressure gradually. Though still work better than my hand brake at the time :D

I just helped pull the tranny out of that car last weekend, I'll snap a few shots of the E-brake setup when we put the new tranny back in. Like everything Clint does, I'm sure it's some really cool, trick setup.

If I was to move the e-brake back to compensate for my longer arms I would have to move is 6" or more. What are you guys doing for the sheath on the cable once it leaves the pan?

The steering is finished. I have to say this as a disclaimer this is very much the redneck, backyard, poor mans way of doing the steering.  Here is what I did. I had to lengthened the steering shaft that attaches to the steering gear because I moved the frame head forward 3.5" and yes I said steering gear. Then because my beam is 12" wider I had to lengthen both tie rods. I have a super beetle that I stole the tie rods out of. I used those rods to cut in half as my rod ends. I used 1" DOM Steale as my tie rods. Because I'm using stock l/p spindles I had to use l/p rod ends on the outside and b/j on the inside. I raised the steering gear about 1/4" with a shim and I also cut and raised the passenger side of the pitmen arm 1/4" to help with clearance over the frame head. It all worked out quite well I think. Believe me when I say, just as soon as I can afford it I will have a Saco rack and raised combo spindles. But until then I think this will work just fine. Don't look to close at the welds as I'm not the best by any means.

Where are you guys putting your turning brake? Next to the shifter behind the shifter ? I'm thinking about removing the e-brake handle and putting it behind the shifter at the same hight or maybe a 1" lower the them top of the shifter. What are your thoughts?

That bent tie-rod is going to want to bend more on you; you need to do something about it now! It has a lot of leverage being applied so I suspect it will continue to bend at the weak spot, the bend itself.

A couple of guys have mounted their turning brakes in front of the shifter and at an angle. I am sure they will post pictures and it is a good idea as far as I can tell. Replacing the ebrake may not be a good idea if you want to remain street legal. I mounted mine in between but the handles either have to be shortened (I did but it gives me less leverage) or bent to spread them apart (not good either as you can't pull both of them at the same time which can be needed at times to put a load on the tires if they ar spinning when you get stuck. You might as well have a single handle turning brake system then).

I used t2 hand brake cables, cut off the threaded end, made a longer outer then cut the inner to suit and fitted a buggie hand break shortening kit it works a treat.
