Re: My 68 Bus Build Thread
I recently bought a 71 westy, and will be combining parts out of the two busses to get a more decent looking solid runner. First thing is first though, I currently have 5 cars, so the super beetle is getting parted out. Then begins the parting of the 68 for the 71. Then begins the work on the 71. I may try to run my 1776 in the 71 (out of my super beetle) but fear the engle 110 cam may be a bit to top endy for pushing a bay window around. Then again I have a stockish 1600 DP with a 1 5/8 exhaust pushing it around now with a stock carb, so I guess anything is possible...

Re: My 71 Westy EFI MEga Squirt Bus Build Thread
Ok, changed it up a bit, the 68 is too smashed up for me to save, it is now a parts bus for our 71 westy. The engine in the 68 will make its way into the 71. I just pulled the 1776 out of my super beetle and sold the beetle. The 1776 has big heads and a 110 engle cam. It never ran very well with an 010 and kadrons. It did run pretty well with EDIS and Mega Jolt with the Kadrons. I'm hoping I won't have to tear this engine down and change the came to get it to work for the bus, I think it makes as much low end power as my stock DP 1600 does and even more power up top, which should be great for going up hills on the freeway. I will be FINALLY using my mexican FI intake stuff with CB end castings matched to the heads and my Mega Squirt to get this baby going! I will be digging my EFI stuff out of storage over the holiday (hopefully) and begin cleaning up and squirting the 1776. If anyone KNOWS this motor combo will suck in a heavy westy, let me know now, because I CAN put an engle 100 in the case, and have the lifters changed to hydrolic. Not sure if I want to take that plunge or not. Anyone with first hand experience in a baywindow with a 1776 and an engle 110 would be greatly appreciated.

I need to get some decent electrical connectors, where do you get yours?

Re: My 71 Westy EFI MEga Squirt Bus Build Thread
Here is a picture of the EFI Mega Squirt stuff I already have:

I know I am missing some obvious stuff. Injectors, fuel pump, FPR and plumbing are all easy. I'm not sure how the air gets from the center section to the end castings, I might try to fins some silicon hose to use there... Where are people plumbing their sensors?
Should I buy some kind of cable from DIY autotune to get stuff from relay board to MS brain?
I PM'ed Mario about some pieces I am missing. I'm also trying to source a german EFI shroud to go with this setup...

Re: My 71 Westy EFI MEga Squirt Bus Build Thread
I have a 1776, engle 110, 009 dist. with a 2 bbl webber in a 67 bus. I run 7.6:1 compression so I can burn 85 octane at 6000' elevation. The engine is now 10 years old with about 35k miles. The I-80 pass between Laramie and Cheyenne is the highest pass on I-80 and I can do the steep side at 65mph empty or 45mph loaded and pulling a 4x8 trailer. I recently went on the worst road of my life in Colorado where it took an hour to go 2 miles up hill. The engine lugged over the boulders just fine but I did bend a tie rod. I think the engle 110 cam is fine. When I ran 8:1 compression, it ran like a raped ape but I needed high octane gas so I decided to lower the compression.

Re: My 71 Westy EFI MEga Squirt Bus Build Thread
Sweet, I'm running something like 9.5:1 compression, I think, its been a couple years since I built it, hard to recall. I don't mind running 91 octane, small price to pay, my BMW takes it, so I'm used to it. Thanks for the confirmation this will get a bus around, the engine was wicked in my beetle. Do you have a CHT gauge? What kind of head temps are you running if you do have one?

I don't have a CHT gage. I have an oil temp gage though. I run 10-40 Honda motorcycle oil and my oil temp holds at about 210 for a long run. I do abuse it slightly with 65-70mph speeds because everything is so far away in Wyoming but it has held up.

Thats too bad about the CHT gauge I'd be really interested to know what head temps you're running with the motor combo in a bus at those speeds.

Re: My 71 Westy EFI MEga Squirt Bus Build Thread
Got my new wiring bundle and MS to Relay Board harness, I was too lazy to build the one I have in pieces LOL. Just need to get some random fittings, a fuel pump, and a regulator... and go nuts!
I also bought a small oil cooler hole german injected shroud to go with my german injection plenum. Shroud has venturi ring and pushes more air to heads, which is cool because I have an external oil cooler anyways, and my oil temps are low, head temps are high... Needs to be blasted and painted though... Maybe time for awesome powder coat?

Got my new Go Westy LP Tank, kinda sad to see it has scratches new, but I bought it during the 15% off sale last weekend, so I got the tank, jalousie window knobs, and pop top hold downs AND shipping for less than the tank at regular price!
Now to figure out how to mount it on a 71 westy...

Re: My 71 Westy EFI MEga Squirt Bus Build Thread
if its a bay window tank it should mount right up. if it is a vanagon tank you just need some 90 degree angle iron and a drill. I have two tanks on my bay, one is a vanagon tank ones a bay window. the bay one has a bad valve, so its just hanging out, but I got the vanagon one, with propane in it for cheaper than tha parts to fix up the bay window one, and its slightly larger. I thought I was gonna T them together so idont run out, but that thing lasts for EVER. if i get a propane heater, that will change.
as for electrcal connecters, its probably too late now, but Paladin makes a great ratcheting crimper, and you can change out the die and crimp all kinds of things with them. a quality crimper is THE most important electrical tool you can have. chasing bad connections for days/months or for the rest of the life of the car is NOT FUN. once and done. open barrel connecters, called B-type non-insulated connecters, are what i have the best luck with
thats the consumer crimper with the die set yo uwant, or you can go pro for like 110. Absolutly worth it. th

give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Thats very helpful, do you have a link to the pro one?
Any pics of your vanagon or bay tank mounting? I think my tank is a vanagon one...

That Paladin crimper works great... Just get the extra dies, about $25/set.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: My 71 Westy EFI MEga Squirt Bus Build Thread
New Plan, 1.7L Type IV, DTM and EFI. BUT none of my type 1 EFI parts will work on the type iv, what are people using for intake manifolds and throttle bodies? Do you guys just use Webber manifolds and CB throttle bodies? Which manifolds? I think there are different offsets? UGH! More learning curve. no more type 1 for me. I have a 1776 with CB 044 heads with porting by steve tims for sale and a stock 1600 for sale!
I need to afford a DTM and new throttle bodies and manifolds. I do believe I can use my CB rails from my type 1 setup... Any help would be great, not new to VWs (obviously) but new to type IV... Damn it JAKE RABY!

Would the stock type 4 cooling fit in your early bay engine compartment? Word around the camp fire is that someone on here is working on making a set of manifolds to bolt GSXR throttle bodies onto type 4 and type 1 heads, I'm just saying.
