the used to do training missions in Crawford Notch when I was a teen with A-10s cuz the mountains resembled apparently Eastern Europe. Those are some serious badass planes. The only thing bigger than the gun is the man-parts of the people who fly them.

I have seen them in action, friggin badass!

This is my first type 2 and as a type 3 guy I can say whole heartedly that I HATE bus brakes. Now that's out of the way, I took it for a spin after stopping in the gas station and filling her up. This was my first chance to make sure everything works like the speedo, wipers, defroster, and fuel gauge. For being in storage for 30 yrs I am completely surprised that just about all the electrical works. The factory cigarette lighter was shorted, the hot wire to the brake light switches needed replacing, and the reverse switch isn't working...that is all that that didn't work, I didn't even have to clean any of the light sockets. Anyways my little slow paced joy ride came to a screeching halt when I was getting it up to speed. I barely was able to limp it back home, and tomorrows plan is to pull the fuel pump and take it apart to prep it for a rebuild (Friday I had a feeling the fp needed a rebuild so I had already ordered the rebuild kit). 4th gear is an issue too, I might bungie cord it, if I still take it to the Austin show.

One of the experts will have to chime in on this but can you retrofit the power boosted discs brakes from a later Bay? You won't bitch about stopping power then.

A-10s were great aircraft to work on too, most of the time.

They did have a limit how long they could fire the gun, but it wasn't overheating of the gun...
It was more "stopping in mid air" related.

The recoil of 30mm@1000RPM is...hefty.

Sort of a flying Cuisinart for tanks (and pretty much anything else in the way)
If I was on the wrong end of a GAU-8 in a tank I would probably get out RFN and find a hole.

As to the brakes, IIRC 71ish will bolt on, but parts are NLA for those.
Might as well go all out with something you can at least get consumables for.

IIRC the later front ends can be made to fit as a unit with some work.
I can testify that the 73+ power brakes worked just peachy.

Just put 944 brakes on it.

my 77 bay stopped on dime w/ the power booster, and still stopped fine without it. I am pretty sure you could just fab a bracket for the booster and convert, although finding a complete beam would probably be easiest, pretty sure you can just bolt it in. then you "need" a brake proportionig valve for the rear and some vacuum lines and I think you are good to go? never seen early brake parts in person, I think the lever is the same and all?

if not I am parting out a bay, I could cut out the brake pedal parts if you need em, I am keeping the beam and not shipping it of course.
