I would think the think the turbo motor will be pushing 250hp with a proper tune for the short exhaust and air intake.

Are you not in the US that you are doing the JDM route?

EJ25 dohc (not qohc) are used mainly in Forester and Legacy. All over the world as far as I know.
170hp or so - enough to make a vary rapid beetle (especially with a 4.44 final drive ratio to get it off the mark).
Compact engine too - simple install without the hassle of turbo/heat/firewall stuff.

Hmmm from what I can find online, the dimensions of the motors.... is unclear to me.

Looks like the EJ22 is most compact, then the SOHC motors are about 29" wide EJ20 or EJ25, and then the DOHC motors are both 31" wide... which is the same width as the engine bay

IDK, all the information I can find is internet information and so all subject to being inaccurate. SO I suppose a DOHC EJ25 and EJ20 turbo are equally hard to fit and the SOHC EJ25 in theory fits with minimal issues. However, where does one get a SOHC EJ25? They don't seem to be a JDM throw away.

The only reason I want to go with a prevalent JDM motor is the fact that you can get them for $800 a pop with ~60k miles. Whereas all the local places around here want $2500 for a 150k mile worn down motor with no wiring or other parts and you probably have to do a rebuild.

You are right on on the sizes, EJ22 is smallest, then EJ25 SOHC, then the DOHC motors.

The phase 2 SOHC EJ20 and EJ25 are wider, they still interfere with the bumper mounts in a Beetle but nothing like the DOHC engines do.

In Oz you can find the phase 2 EJ25 SOHC on 2001-2005 Impreza RS, 02 onwards Forester and 2000 onwards Legacy.
I don't imagine the states would be much different.

Yeah you can find them at junk yards, they just want way more than they are worth and usually have a lot of miles.

I'm not scared of cutting stuff up and I am fairly solid at metal fabrication, so I think I can make a EJ20 DOHC turbo fit. It's worth a try to get what I want in there, right?

I have decided to use microsquirt and I ordered up the transmission adapter parts.

I'll be collecting parts for awhile now while I am working on other projects.

They can be made to fit by moving the trans forward but you do need to get creative if you want to run bumpers though.

So tell me what you know about radiator dimensions and what fits!

I have read volvo 240 and acura integra radiators fit... Keeping with the less is more theme, cheaper is better.

I used a honda racing radiator I picked up on Craigslist (new) has worked well for 2 years.

ttriebler, If you have a napa store radiator hose #8338 works perfect.

There's no NAPA in Australia but I'm sure the hose could be cross referenced.
Any idea what it is OEM fitment on?
