I ran 50psi once (don't ask) with 040s. the cylinders split and the pistons torched, the heads were fine (CU gaskets)

Hiya guys, Sure as hell strayed from the question. I'm just looking for something that will give me a little bit of low end, not 7,000 rpm shift after shift. Ol' John

Are the valves that come with the CB SE heads now days any good? The single groove ones.

All I have to say is AJ Simms ported 044's 42x37.5, marnell valves which are the "non-manley stainless" valves that Berg sells, they are very good quality. Then use Berg springs, retainers, keepers, etc and your set. I picked up my 42x37.5 AJ ported heads today, and man they're sick. Call and talk to him, and he'll stear you in the right direction for your application too, 714-287-6750. Tell him you heard of him from me.
As for the heat issue with 044's. A friend of mine has a 2110 with a 121/125 with 44x37.5 044 heads, 7.87:1 c/r, 1 and 5/8" exhaust, 48 IDA's, external cooler with thermostat, and his oil temperature is too cold!! It's all about setting your combo up as a whole. If your engine overheats with the 044's, it's not because of the heads IMO.

Your friend needs a friend in the combustion compartment, Mr. Compression Ratio can sure help him out.
He needs 9:1 with that cam, head work and carbs, it'll run like mad!!! But won't overheat...unless it is ran really out of tune.

I have a set of AJ heads on a 044 casting, and there is no way that same port could have been put in a o40 casting without tons of welding.
That can cause problems also, plus it will drive the price up big time. So if your going after huge ports, the 044 is the way to go.
I agree with Jake, to a point. If your desired port size will fit in a 040 without welding, then that's a better, cooler running casting.
