alternatives to porsche boxes?

Post by Bare »

Not entirely sure what gives here BUT from direct personal experience I know that the the ring and pinion gear of the Renault 5spd box as in their R17 Gordini does NOT "flip", one requires a ring/pinion set cut to rotate in the other direction.
Was trying to find a cheap substitute for my Europa's trans.. and there was no way to use an OEM Renault box 'reversed' without the appropriate ring/pinion. Would this not hold true of any other trans using a hypoid/bevel ring/pinion assly??

dont know whether anyone else has skoda's apart from us, but a friend of mine raised some interesting points:
yes, yes i know about their stigma, but after all theyre now owned by vw, so a skoda box could be considered an accepted mod!
skoda's whatever your opinion of them always did very well in terms of reliability in a lot of rally events. dont know whether the road going versions are capable of taking lots of power, but theyre readily available, and cheap, if they'll fit, that is. i'll sit here quietly and wait for the backlash!
by the way, i was thinking about the older rear wheel drive models, not the latest ones with vw boxes

Well my idea for a strong cheap 5 speed.
It is a easy match to a 228 T4 flywheel

A late T25 box.

Now its a bit big and there will need to be some clearancing and the shifter mech is a bit strange.

The ratios are not that high either but i am giving it some thought. I'm sure there would be some major problems but it should be cheap. No expensive machining required (flash flywheels or input shafts).

With 195x65x15 I think 105mph @5000rpm.

Put me right if you know something I don't.

The 094 is quite stout (I assume the 094 is what came in the T25...the 094 is the 5 speed version of the 091). I talked to the guys at Weddle Engineering about using one many moons ago. They tried to discouraged me by saying the box is quite a bit larger than the type I box and would require clearancing...HOWEVER, it's certainly no more work than installing a Porsche 901 or 915.

Let us know what you find out

A targa tasmania (big road rally event down here) beetle used a fully built Berg 'box and after a few days in the event it decided to spit out 3rd gear.
I'm not sure on the quality of the Hewland items (they could be poorer for all I know) but for the price they are offering for all new parts. And the car's they run them in, it's definately more suited to my long term motor racing achievements than the Berg item is.

Aparently there is a new 6 speed sequential hewland item which can lend itself to a VW based application, although the cost's I'm not entirely sure about?!?!
And I'm positive all Hewland items come with LSD.... correct me if I'm wrong on those points though!

The standard Mk9 Hewland gearbox (with Mk8 ratios) is only rated to 150 lb.ft (21 kg/m) torque, and only comes with a standard diff. You would have to upgrade to the Mk 5 ratios to get the free LSD, rated to 180 lb.ft (25 kg/m), and this one costs £3,090.

For higher spec, prbly the best bet would be http://www.xtrac.com , but you can bet your life that they're products won't be cheap Image (i.e., their gearboxes were fitted to the first six cars to finish the Paris-Dakar this year!)

It is now. I produce a reversed ring and pinion for the Subaru 5 speed and 6 speed TY75XXXX boxes (not the giant STi 6 speed) which allow you to flip the diff. This way all the gears inside the box still run the way they are supposed to and all the forces on the box are the same as standard. Ring and pinions cost $1500 AUD.

You can shorten the 4WD boxes to run 2WD and they fit in the same space as a beetle/kombi box - can be fitted into a beetle without cutting the torsion bar. !st to 5th shift pattern is the way it's intended to be when hooked up to the bettle shift rod.

Inexpensive LSD's are available and a range of aftermarket gearsets to hold up to around 650hp are sold by many vendors.
The later model boxes from around 99 onwards (TY754XXXX) are stronger than the older TY752XXXX boxes and most are factory rated to 280hp.
