Auxiliary Air Regulator Questions...
There should be a vw# or a Bosch # on the side of the aux. air reg. It is exactly the same part and has been on the FI engines since the beginning. But when in doubt...ask them to look it up. If they can't, chances are..they can't get it. I will post the # for you hopefully tomorrow. Ray

Auxiliary Air Regulator Questions...
... I have never seen a correctly tuned engine get significantly higher rpm from an open AAR...here is the catch...when COLD.
Actually, that's what I was saying. The engine "wants" to idle very low when it is cold (too low to actually keep running), and the AAR makes it run higher than that. Which is pretty much the "normal" idle RPM or a little bit higher. That's why the smiley face on the "you're all wrong" statement...
The type 4 AAR I am speaking of..for 411/412 IS the same as the 914. I bought one last year at the dealer for $89 + tax.
That was last year. I gave the parts guys the correct VW part number for a 914 1.8 AAR, which is listed as the same Bosch part number as the 1.8L Type IV in my Bosch catalog. It was specifically listed as NLA and the replacement part listed was a 944 part. This happened last month.
If the real part is still available, tell me how to get ahold of it!! We have one customer who was not at all happy to get the "wrong" part!!

Dave...I'll see if I can get a line on that part. Since my 412 is down for a couple more months...I keep getting to the computer at work with no parts references with me. Ray

any tips on teardown of the aar. i have a 1975 914 2.0 and the aar looks
like it is pressed closed. any suggestions on how to open it up without
destroying it? thanks for all the great info, guys!

There is no real way to open this...but there are cleaner ones. I take a dremel tool with a sanding drum...and work around the edge...carefully. It grinds away the crimp. I then put it back togtether with a modified stainless clamp. Notch the clamp on each edge....and at both ends. Then with a careful hand....fold it over around the edge with a pliers .....taco style....and deburr teh notches. The clamp then tightens up nicely. Use a hair bit of high temp sealer. I'll see if I can post some pictures to you when I get home . Ray
