In order to do the 930 conversion you will need to buy a set of converted 930 stubs and tranny flanges, a set of custom axles and the 930 joints if you want to run stock arms and your stock brakes. once those are bought you can bolt it right in. A good machine and welding shop may be able to rework the old stubs and flanges but i just bought some already done.

Is it safe and reliable to do it this way(to grind the shoulder next to the joint)?

I am asuming you mean I would remove material from the CV where the axle maxs out, to allw for a greater travel...

If you do it carefully, yes. Otherwise, NO. There is a shoulder on the axle the the CV bottoms against. You want to grind a relief into that shoulder, if you go too deep (into the diameter of the axle) it will cause the axle to break, if you leave a sharp corner it will cause the axle to break, if you do it right and don't create a stress riser it should be ok, at least as ok as a stock axle.

What if I were to use Stock late model type2 axles on my stock IRS rear suspension?
What will I have to do to get those to work with my trans, brakes etc? I know I'd need to get some inner stub axles (or would I?) the cv joints and axles, but what about outter stubs?

Both need to be modified to mount the type 2 CVs. See www.precisionalloy.com

CV Joint help!

Post by vwlownslo »

I have just found out that I can use the following to components to do what I am after (I want to use bus cv joints in my bug while retaining as stock suspension parts as possible)

* inner stub axles from a Bus transmission
(they will bolt right in.... Right?)

* modified Bug outter stub axles(redrilledand tapped for type 2 cv joints)

* Inner bus CV joints

* outter Bus CV joints

Does that sound right guys?

Sorry for asking so many questions regarding this topic, I was just dying to know! lol...

The inners from the bus trans will NOT bolt into a type 1 trans. You need to have the originals modified just like the stub axles.

Oh, oops...

I also read on here that 924/944 stubs will bolt in and they will accept T2 T4 and 181 CV joints.. is this true?

I just upgraded my whole rear end. I wanted 930 components too, but Rancho recommended BUS components. They said the T1 tranny even with a super diff, cant handle the added weight and size of the 930 components. In the long run, they said I will end up trashing the T1 tranny earlier then expected. They built me up a brand new T1 tranny and also sold me all the CV/stub/axel parts I needed. T2 is the way to go with a T1 tranny. If you move to the BUS tranny, 930 is better for more angle on the CV's.

Hey Dean, do you know if the same is true (The 924/944/181 Thing parts will wear out the type 1 trans as well) regarding the 924/944 CV joints and flanges?

Because if thats the case, I'll just use bus components. thanks.

All of those CVs are type 2 compatable ( there are some differences in thickness and in ball sizes but all are the same bolt pattern and very close if not the same weight) and interchangable. They could be thought of as the same CV joint.

Well, when I ordered my 930 CV joints, Stub axels with flanges, and axels they, supplied me with special longer stainless steel bolts for the CV's. The place then called me and said Rancho did not recommend the 930 parts, so I had to send everything back and got BUS CV joints, stub axels with flanges and axels. They told me to use my T1 CV bolts over again, so I'm imaging that the 930 parts either had a different bolt, different bolt pattern or just needed longer bolts. I really didnt look to see if they were the same bolt pattern as the T2, since we crossed shipped them. I can tell you that the 930 CV joint and flanges on the stub axels were a heck of a lot bigger than the T1 stuff. They were larger diameter and a thicker CV bearing. Dont know if the 930 stuff is the same size as T2.

As for the other 924/44/181 stuff, I have no idea. I am just going by what Rancho said. You might want to call them and ask about your specific setup. My tranny with super diff, 4.86 gearing and heavy webbing was $1100, but I didnt get it direct; I went through my parts guy (he ordered it from Rancho). The trans is way cool looking and according to Rancho, should handle the mods with easy. The tranny came with everything but the front tranny mount. I will have to reuse my old one.

Good luck

Why would they not recommend the 930 CV joints? This seems a little odd to me. If they are hoping that the CV will break before the Trans does, then I would be questioning their trans quality.

I'm guessing it is the flywheel effect (hard on syncros possibly). usabug; 930 CVs are both thicker and a different pattern as well as they use a bolt of larger diameter. In every way they are bigger and better than type 2 CVs. But if you don't need them to achieve the travel you want then you are just spending money.
