Are you one of those confused people who can't make up their mind?

gcorona, RayGreenwood is the guy to talk to on the site. I'm sure this was posted not that long ago. It's NOT an easy conversion. See the Type 4 areas ....

Why is an autostick too complicated???? guess i have never converted too one... but have converted from one and it was not that difficult...

To convert from an autostick the main things changed are the tranny, pedal cluster and adding a clutch cable. To convert to an autostick the tranny, shifter, vacuum tank, vacuum solenoid, atf pump, atf tank need to be changed or added, plus all the extra vacuum and atf lines. I started to do this on my '61 Baja Bug, and it's not easy.

Looks pretty easy so long as you have all the stuff... of course you have to cut a few holes in the body... either way sounds easier then going full automatic unless you find a T1 fully auto tranny...

I posted the same question a while back in the drag racing fourm theres a few people out that are racing automatics ive heared things from like you have cut the horns off and fab new ones to fit auto-trans and also theres the torque converter and flex plate work has to be done to converter if your not going with stock motor. The pan has to be IRS or if swing-axle you have to convert to IRS.Im also looking to put a full auto trans in my early bug and found its not going be be easy but what is.

I found your posts, 60rg. I'm curious about how GDRBO installed a bus tranny into his buggy. What kind of modifications did he have to do?

I have seen and taken the engine from one automatic type2 (bus), they excist, the trans is a little (very little) bigger then a normal trans, shouldn't be harder do make it fit then any other 091.

I found out that a 75 type2 was the best auto trans to use I know that theres adapters to do like a 091 trans swap but i dont know if it will work for the auto-trans and if your going to use t1 motor with the auto-trans. Youre goig to have get a flex-plate from t1 auto-stick have the center taken out and have it welded to the t2 flex-plate.And also theres an issue with the axles.Im trying to find out if a t3 auto-trans will work.

Anything can be done, given enough time and money.

The basic reply is no. Tranny is a lot bigger, longer and on, and on.
One side uses a short axle, the other is longer.

Now, don't let me stop you from trying. I own a 69 Type 3 fastback with a automatic. It is basicly a Borge-Warner transmission, licensed to VW. The full auto tranny's share some parts and such. Type 3, Type 4 are almost the same, the T4 tranny is 'supposed to go into a type 3, but the other way takes a little work Bus/Vanagon tranny takes more work. I have seen these installed on drag bugs, but those folks didn't worry about the fabracation work on the pan.

Early Audi's and VW (watercooled) Rabbits, Golf's and Cabbies have a lot of the same internal parts. You can search the Type 3 forum for some info too.

Good Luck with your project.

vwfreek,Ive been looking into a tiptroic saw one on ebay for about 13 hundred that would be the s***t to put one in a bug might as well if ive got go to the trouble of cutting, welding or driiling might as well make it worth it. I asume that there will promlem with axles I dont know but IMO maybe 944 parts might fit if those rear disk brakes can be used on a bug maybe some of those parts might work.

T3 tranny into a bug

Post by ShutupandDrive »

I knew a guy in NC who was building a bug for his wife with a fully automatic T3 tranny in it. It required a lot of fabrication but looked great when it was done! I never got to see the whole car finished because he was still doing some body work with the body off when I moved to CA. I'm flying back to NC on Monday to visit, so I'll ask around and see if I can get in touch with the guy and maybe get some pics for you.

It's been done, it just takes some fabrication skills.
