no matter how hard you try you will not please everybody its human nature that some people no matter what will not be happy i cant beleive that one small incident could stall the show just like that unless mayby jake wasnt up for it anyway too busy! having too much on your plate to do is a sure fire way for something to not get done!

charles i think it would be cool for you to run the front end.

But nothing is set at all with anyone doing the parts biz......... Charles is a great prospect, but ultimately I'd still hear whiners, and tire kickers.......

At this point its a write off with me-

Jake,

I'm really sorry to hear this hit you so hard. I really do think you are on the verge of opening the Type IV market to an entire new audience with the Type IV store. I hope a few nights sleep and some input from supporters will allow you to rearrange things so it can still become a reality. I was wondering when something was going to crash with all the mammoth projects recently. Even you can only do so much. Take a few days, step back and look at it fresh. I'm sure no matter what you decide, everyone here will support you. It certainly would be a shame to see such a great prospect disappear though.

Jake, I will be glad to help you with this! As you know I have been selling parts for many years. We stock over 25,000 part numbers in my store and I could show you how we keep track of them. The public will always be hard to deal with. My DAD always said "Consider the source" That really helps when your dealing with some _ _ _ _ _ _ _. CLIFF

Cliff, Tom and the rest thanks...

The customer did call to apologize to me, and I thanked him for letting me see the light.
I'm still not happy about the email, but I'm much calmer now.

Alot of times when things hit me, I react violently. Kind of a Blitzkrieg attitude. Sometimes I should not.

This has definately slowed things down on the parts for sure. I don't know whats going to happen, or when but it probably won't even be considered again till I get a plan and a person that can run this 100%. Thing is that that person does not exist. NO ONE knows this stuff, and the compatibility- Thats what sucks. Thats why my arrangement was going to kick serious ass for the TIV world.

Jake, will you still be offering your consulting service for $250? Information like which crank and connecting rods to buy along with blueprints for a machinist to properly clearance them for specific applications etc? You could include a disclaimer that it's just your professional opinion and you won't be held liable for any problems the buyer might encounter ...

Jake, I'm very sorry to hear this... And I'm glad you have calmed down.

Do not throw out a good idea just because you had one bad e-mail--You didn't stop building motors because of PAPUN, DID YOU? ;-)

As it has been said before though, let the people who sell parts and deal with the public do so, and let the folks who design parts and build motors do that...

(Keep the engineers locked up before they insult somebody...)

Good luck whatever you do, but I want to buy what you are selling.

At least rods. Soon.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I don't know... After today alot of things are up in the air.

Like people always say. "If something works, don't change it"

My shop has worked like a well oiled machine for the last 7 years, change has seized a bearing in that machine...

In 2004 I was going to make alot of changes, about 50% of those I have decided against now. Even with the configuration service people could give me a hard time. All it takes is some genius to decide to slap a suite on me for helping him choose his combo...He'd probably pay a lawyer to bust the disclaimer anyway.

Another day like this, and I'll be looking for someone to buy the shop, call it his and I'll just work for him! Atleast I'll make a weekly paycheck, have holidays off, get a christmas bonus, and be able to call in sick. I'd work behind closed doors, not talk to a soul on the phone or answer a single damn email. Sounds like heaven to me.

You all may or may not remember a post I put up back on December 17, asking about cam gears and mods to install the Schadek oil pump in a T4. Jake responded that he had spot faced cam gears in stock. I ordered one the same day.

Yesterday I Emailed Jake, wondering where the cam gear was. My case was apart, everything cleaned and ready to reassemble. I got Email that afternoon from Kathy that the gear had just shipped Fed Ex that day and I could track it today (Tuesday). So first thing this morning I got on FedEx.com and entered the tracking number only to receive a surprise in the form of a promised delivery date of 1/7 (thanks to Fed Ex Ground). Well, I will be back at work 1/5 and the engine is going in my daily transportation so I freaked out, treated Jake like any other vendor and shot off an angry Email. The rest you see.

Jake is not just another vendor. This community that Jake has pulled together is like family to me. I've wanted to put a T4 motor in my old 912 for more than 20 years. Guess what--20 years ago there WAS no community of enthusiasts centered around a bona fide expert, our own Jake Raby. If I had done this 20 years ago I would have been on my own and it would have sucked. I am not a professional mechanic, don't even play one on TV. I'm an electronic engineer. I'm learning this as I go as most of us are. And Jake is responsible for more of my learning than anyone else. Period.

So consider this a public apology to Jake and especially to Kathy Jacobs, who I must say was extremely gracious to me on the phone today after receiving my Email blast. For those of you who don't know, Kathy is working to provide a buffer between Jake and bozos like me. So cut her some slack, she is performing an important public service. And I am not joking about that.

I hope the parts thing works out. Retail is a bitch, it takes a certain kind of personality with a very thick hide. I know I don't have it, which is one reason I am not in business for myself. Jake, I hope you can find someone to give you a hand with this venture. It will change the world of T4 by providing the community with quality in a world of "good enough". And that's a big deal these days, one reason I am still driving a 37 year old car.

cheers
Adam

what in THE HELL are you talking about? We sell parts from over 100 vendors, we have bought less then 10 items from CIP....... Exactly who kicked you out of bed this morning?

Jake has his strengths. I don't dispute that Jake MAY handle things better, but that's because he's not getting 2300 e-mails A DAY (not a misprint). Knoweth the truth before you spread this crap Airhead.

As a fellow busines owner I feel your pain.

If you can learn from my mistakes please listen. Get a REAL accounting system set up (one that REALLY tracks inventory -- creates purchase orders -- issues invoices etc) along with a contact management system before going live. It's all the small details that multiply when working in distribution.

It's not selling 200 pieces a year (or engines)... it's buying several hundred line items from 20 vendors for 1000 customers. Doing the math there's a matrix of millions of potential mistakes.

Contact me personally if our company can help yours -- we've been in it for 65 years... and still making honest mistakes

Takes a big man to learn from his mistakes -- bigger man to point them out in public ... prudent flaming yourself before the customer started it.

Timmy

PS... Someone asked if you could have John C at Aircooled sell your stuff -- please don't do this... contrary to the many accolades he gets for reselling California Imports Parts, his technical support, follow up, communication and dedication is not on your level --
