A couple of years ago I put a three rib tranny into my Bug (type I). I did not, and I understand, you do not need to shorten the trans main shaft for this combination. Others have told me that the trans mainshafts that need to be shortened are from transmisssions much newer than what you have. Good luck, my first 3 rib would not stay in 4th. I really like the low gear.

A 72 would have had a type 4 motor and will need the shorter input shaft to allow installation of a type 1 motor. The best way is to remove the bellhousing and the snap ring, slide back the coller and unscrew the shaft. Installation of the shorter shaft is the reverse. For downright quick and dirty just grind off about 3/8 of an inch.
