It was an option, and not uncommon parts in junkyards.
You are mistaken. Supers were never sold in North America with discs. Just like standard Beetles never had.

Here are factory disc spindles for 71-73 Supers:

Wow, I guess the $75 my son paid for the whole setup (steering knuckle/calipers/rotors) was a good deal, eh?

Are you absolutely SURE front discs on SB wasn't an available option in the US?
(when you ordered the car)
Admittedly they weren't COMMON...

I have worked on several Disc-equipped SBs over the years, and none of them were European imports, just run-of-the-mill daily drivers, a couple were 1 owner.(little old lady and all that)

There were NOT modified cars in any way.

I have raced SP before with drum to disc front conversion and had no rule problems.

Also note that SB (factory) disc setups are findable in junkyards...
Kinda hard to believe there were that many European spec SBs in the US.

Absolutely. VWoA was very consistent about what they brought in. For example, after 69, not one swing axle Beetle was imported to the USA by VWoA. But 70s swing Beetles do exist in the USA. Notchback T3s were also never imported, but they're also in the US. I've heard of a couple of disc brake Supers around here. The US Army has bases in Germany. It was common for service personel to bring back cars with them since the army shipped them for free. Swap out the speedo and you can't tell it's a Euro spec car (except for the brakes) Did your son's spindles look like the ones in the ad I linked to above?

The parts have been available for years to do what amounts to a factory swap to discs, which is plenty of time for them to get mounted, and teh car to become a rust bucket and get scrapped with the discs still on it. I E-bay'd a set 18 months ago (got 75) that I got this very way.

What do you do about the weight requirement in SM?

I'm thinking of going XP this year. With the turbo I can't run EP anymore. XP is a new class.

From the SCCA 2006 rules (best I can tell):
SM 2400lbs min (rear wheel drive and rear engine penalty)
DM 1280lbs min Less than 2000cc
EM 1700lbs min
XP 1820lbs min 1200+600+20 (includes turbo penalty)

my ghia weighs in at 1740 lbs. (last year without the turbo)
