When you see both sides together, you can really see how the left has perished badly, whilst the right is in good condition.

Image

I'd wrapped the left hand downpipe and the 'collector', simply to minimise the potential heat damage to oil pipes, rather than pushing for better performance out of the turbo.... but I think I'll be avoiding it in the future :(

I'll keep welding it this year and maybe look at importing a heavy mild steel manifold from your side of the world, and get it coated or I might look locally. There's a few stainless steel copies of the CB performance manifold in the UK and Europe.

I'd hoped that my next big spend would be for a stronger gearbox, rather than buying stuff that I've already got...

I must post some good news some time..... my thread is all doom and gloom all the time! Honestly, things aren't half as bad as it appears

I've had that exact same issue on my old CB header.. I caught it sooner than you though, and only saw a sort of hammered finish look to the metal. The wrap had only been on mine for a VERY short time. It was only really prevalent right out of the cylinder head where the gas flow is the hottest. Any time I've used wrap since, I've always made it a point to keep that segment of the pipe unwrapped. Not only does the wrap trap moisture, it also allows the metal to get too hot which in my opinion is what is causing that scaling look.

Yep, that hammered finish is strange and it looks like it runs really deep into the metal. I started to pick it off.... it's like fish scales! Gave up as it felt like I'd pick my way all the way through to the inside...

I've had a very productive birthday :D It would appear that I've reached the age when everyone wants to give me money.

I've been wanting to upgrade my inlet for sometime, and now (all of a sudden!) I can.

I did want to use a single throttlebody and CB injection endcastings, so I've kind of made an English version.

Firstly the inlet manifolds...

Image

I've bought a pair of these - without throttles, so they're just end pieces, and I'm only using the inner bank of injectors.

Next I've bought a single throttlebody, the same as in this pic...

Image

And I'm aiming to weld this to the top of my chargecooler - and to the top T...

Image

I should get these later on this week, maybe next week. I'll mock it all up first and get you all to take a look and pass comment.

I'm happy though

Me too.

Found a few pics of the single throttlebody and the fuel rails....

Image

Theres two spigots / joining thingys that bolt to the top and bottom of the single body, and it's those that I'll be welding to an alloy T and to the chargecooler.

I like these...

Can't wait :) Not certain if I feel like an expectant father or a kid at Christmas..... probably the kid though

Look forward to seeing it run.

sooooo..........
Run it at York on the 20th April?
It looks like I might be free and really want to take the bug down the strip.
Will need to try and sort my throttle before then though.

I'm definately aiming to get to York, and hopefully getting down the strip too - though I can't see that gearbox lasting :?

But get yourself there.. the beetles are always outnumbered by the beetles ( you only need full throttle )

Ta Paul, I should be ok but I need to plan a bit, got the AA on speed dial!

My bits arrived the other day, they're huge compared to my mexican ones...

Image

I've nearly got them on. Spent the weekend match porting the manifolds and searching ebay for some bigger injectors - sadly my original ones dodn't physically fit.

Won a set of low mileage Bosch 440cc ones. :)

So now, just the throttle linkeage to sort out, then its a case of bolting it all together.

Posting like a man posessed.... that's 3 posts in under an hour...

Here's how things are looking..

Image

Here's the throttle linkage issue. Ideally I need to move the cable up about 3 inches as I need to 'pull' from higher to get full throttle. I'm thinking of simply repositioning the hole through the fan shroud.

Thats some quick work there! have you seen the roller throttle guides?
http://www.jbevwstore.com/roller-throttle-tube.html

that may help.
( i started writing this about 30 hours ago so aplogies if this has been covered)

I'd love to tell you how I got on.... but my iphone has died, and using a camera is plain hard work.

I did think about a roller tube guys, but the angle of attack was all wrong, meaning that the direction of pull would mean I couldn't get full throttle because I'd be pulling downwards when I needed to pull straight backwards towards the fan shroud.

Shame really, I've ended up by drilling another hole in the shroud, 3 or 4 inches directly above the original and inserting a swan neck shaped fuel pipe. ( Do you have swans in America? shure you do  ) So it now pullls at the right angle but there's a bit too much drag on it. I think long term I'll be welding a tube for the dump valve, directly onto the top of the chargecooler.. thus dropping the throttlebody by 3 or 4 inches.... roller throttle would work a treat then.

A good day today :D I've just about assembled everything, positioned and fitted all my breather pipes, fuel pipes with sexy new alloy AN6 fittings.

Tomorrow I've got a website to build... which gets in the way a bit :?

Then I've got to come up with a fuel pump block off, top the oil up and then see if she'll start. The map could be miles out - so I've wound my MBC down to nothing - but I won't be doing much until I get it back on the rollers next week ( remind me to book it in)

Last job will be to try and fabricate some kind of heat protection from a few bits of used heat shielding from a Ford mondeo I get off ebay.

Budget has come to an abrupt halt.
