Joxracing's 1966 Baja "The Resurection"

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Started on my new engine build...

it will be a completely new build out of one of my spare blocks, and im doing it with a great engine builder in my town...

he's a great guy, and supplied me with parts, facility and expertise...

heres some specs:
AS41 block
Engle 110 cam
Holley/weber progressive carb

Now for the big question...

should i drop some cash on some bigger power and bore it out?
what size do you guys think?

I have a good set of stock pistons with new rights that he gave me, but i figured if its all apart, why not go big?
my dad says ill be wastin money

Im thinking 1776 or 1835, what do you guys think?

...also, what are drilled lifters?
and what dizzy should i run with this combo?

heres a few pics...

What does the BR mean on these heads... isnt that from bazil?

Image

also... as any one ever seen these little pivot heads on the rockers...?

Size all depends on your pocket book. A 1776 is a great engine and will give a good power boost over stock, without needing expensive dual carbs. Besides having to bore the case and heads for the bigger pistons and cylinders, there is almost no downside to a 1776. 1835 is the same everything, but thinner cylinder walls...not good for a baja.

The adjuster feet are "Elephant foot" adjusters. If they don't show any wear, re-use them. They are the next best thing to roller tip rockers.
I don't always show my signature. But when I do, it's in this area.

A buddy of mine swears by the 1776. The rest is heads and gears... Here's his kid in his DD Bug with a NA1776. I went for a ride in it once. Not a kids car in my book, but very fun.

Yes. Unless you buy new heads cut for 90.5 cylinders.

The fastest VW I ever drove was '56 with a 1776....but it did have a hot cam, Superflow heads, and dual 48 IDFs

Jox, For what it's worth... I ran an 1835 with a stock heads, crank, cam and carb. All the money was in the machining for the case and heads. I ran it for 10 years and about 30k miles of everything from mountains, & rocks to freeways, desert roads, to sand dunes. In the end it let go big time. (bottom end, not cylinders) I don't know if 30k is good or not but I was pleased with the 10 years. Either way 1176 or 1835 there is a lot of performance gain to be had there...If the budget allows, do it?

Jox,

What ever size you go with.... stock 1600 to 1915

The biggest power improvement is from cylinder heads...

My $.02 & 33 years running an air flow stand...

Big valves and the right ports is where to spend your $$$..

no matter the size ... it has to be able to breathe...

the grease aught to stop the rust you know! those beams looked swell to me!

anyways, I HIGHLY reccomend some pro VW engine builder port your heads for you, and at the VERY least get a three angle valve job and run SI swirl polished valves. Up next, if you have a few bucks left over, is to keep that bore stock since you have good P/c set, and just get a small stroker crank, like a 76 or 74, and you can use all your other stock parts, just need a couple shims. gives you a 1741 I think, or something in the 1700 range, and a nice low power band for that off road grunt. Eveyone does bore kits cause they are scared of strokers, but there is really nothing to a 76mm.
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.
