I'm with this man. One of the keys to drifting is lots and lots of power. The days of low power drifters have gone. I'd suggest you build a stroker, coz you're going to need power + a fat torque curve. I'd also suggest that you spend lots of money keeping the engine cool. Porsche fan, external oil cooler(s), big intercooler, etc. The problem with drifting is that it puts an enormous load on the motor while the car is not moving very fast at all. This is death for a VW. Especially with a mag case. The added drama with a VW is all the weight over the back wheels adding even more load.
I'd look at a Subaru WRX motor/porsche gearbox if you are serious about this. It will save you a lot of money and heartache. There's a porsche racing in D1 as I understand it. Check out what he's doing and you'll see what you're up for.
not sure if this is relevant, but if the plan is to stick with a VW aircooler (particularly turboed), then significant cooling is needed. Porsche went to watercooled heads on the 969 to combat all these sorts of issues.

i'm very interested in this. there are two options I've heard of:
(1) putting subaru heads on ACVW motor. I can't remember who, but someone on these forums is doing it. It's a HUGE amount of fab.

I remember Scat or Truhaft built a water cooled type 1. Heads, cylinders & case & ran the pump external off the crank pulley. But that was maybe 25 years ago.

subaru heads are a lot of stuffing around. look at the hybrid motor in perversion conversions and see just how much. I don't know why you'd go to that much effort when you could just use the whole subaru motor which has a much stronger bottom end and case.
The motor Subaru used in the late 70's known as the EA71 uses 92mm pistons. I believe the EA81 which replaced it for a couple years is also a 92mm piston.
