Hi! Cool car! I'm considering doing something like that in the future, but i'm broke and don't have the car to do it to yet, hopefully within the summer... I was wondering if you have any idea (with say 3inch lift) how big tires would fit without cutting the fenders? and how big do you think i could go and still fit chains (rear only) in the winter?

In regards to clearance for chains, those tires were 30-9.50-15's, and they were real close to the spring plates, and inside fenderwells. Even with 3" bodylift, not sure if there would be room for chains. Not sure where you are, but most VW's with just a studded tire, will go almost anywhere in the snow. A few guys here by me drive their cars all winter with snow tires. Also have to report we sold this car a while back, it has been lowered back to stock, and they are looking for stock fenders to put back on it. But the new owner really likes the car, and plans to keep it a long time.

did you do anything with the front susp was wondering cause i cant find to much info on them. is it the same as welding adjusters in the front or is yours all stock hight(susp wise) except the body lift?

how difficult was the body lift to make? would it be something i could bend and fit at home and weld somewere else? i ask cause i dont have a welder at home but can use the one at work if i have it all ready when i get there.

I'm in norway, we get a lot of snow and have a lot of hills. The chains are mostly for an emergency, so might not be a big issue, the most important would be what tires i could get inside the fenders (not sure it would be legal to cut them). Thanks anyways!

Thor stick to vanagons they have better heat for the winter use the square in the summer no need for chains on the square

Well, the vanagon is kinda expensive to own... Insurance and road tax for a vanagon is about 2k a year, and less than 18mg (might be my "spirited" driving style) at almost 8$ per gallon adds up pretty fast for a student. Compared to that a type 3 is classed as vintage and road tax and insurance sums up to around 150-200$ Big savings right there, thats why I'm thinking a squereback, still big enough to carry my crap around but small enough to be a practical daily driver... theres more if you want

No that all makes sense yes they are a little pricy to repair hence mine is in the garage without plates while I drive a suby but here we dont have the taxe's or qite the gas prices.

Not to hijack (but I am anyway...), if you get that Vanagon, AJ, we sold the Dakota last week.

...and replaced it with a 3/4 ton diesel Suburban. The tow vehicle awaits:).
