When I get home tonight I will look it up and post it for you. Worked really good and with the TDI starter you can get a socket on the second bolt.

Autozone starter part number 17305 $126 including core charge. Has been working great with no issue I believe it is a Passat TDI 2001.

Recap just in case:
Jetta VR6 automatic w/9 tooth gear starters fit T1 transmissions. (manual and T3 automatic, probably 411 as well, not 100% sure on latter.
Did they sell TDis with automatics? Ugh... they probably took the same starter.
The TDi manual starters fit 091/094 and 090 autos and 914/911 transmissions as they have a deeper offset. IIRC they need a spacer as well.

99% sure of that, as long as the bell housing etc was not swapped for an 091 for T4/228mm FW use.
(I have a trans like that, somewhere)

so, to clarify, the bosch SR0407X starter is the preferred choice for the subaru swapped cars, correct? i need to oder one. it seems to fit most TDI automatic's with a 9 tooth pinion. just want to make sure before i order one

Thanks! That's good to know. Other than filing the holes, it is a "direct fit" (haha...like any part of this swap is direct fit!)

Can I run an 11 tooth starter ? 12v flywheel etc. I can get one locally and want to jump on it but if it work then I'll pass.

9 tooth only. 11 tooth will just munch the flywheel.

Tagging for future reference - I have a 914 transmission I'm going to be swapping into my Karmann Ghia.

That be the one, you'll need to spend a few minutes with a rattail file or such to move one of the bolt holes, but its worth it.
It centers on the big round hole in the trans, not the bolts.
Thanks for the link, I need another one anyway, put the one I had on the square in the vanagain to spin over the 3.6/6 on the automagic trans... yes, I just bought one. Works on automatics just peachy too.
I think I tried it successfully on a 914 and 091 trans as well. Has lots of throw.
