If all goes well with my AMR500... and I have a few thousand miles of enjoyment, I plan on using mine for turbo too. Nice to see someone has done it.

Re: 200hp 1200DP Turbo 'Challenger motor'
9 years ago I used a subaru TD04L-13T unit, great turbo, would have used it again, but could not find one anymore for reasonable money.
The one in the pics is also a 2 ltr street unit, this time from a Saab 9-3: Garrett GT1752S. The 13T has a 56mm compressor exducer wheel for comparison. Garrett is 52mm (smaller, i assume it makes less power therefore)

Its a TD-04L-13T that you want: that one is from a Suby.
Its just one letter difference

That would plan B when the current Garrett doesn’t reach 200hp (and when I think it might be turbo’s limits), but for now, lets just try and finish the engine and make it running

Why not go for a TD03-10TK3 (BMW N54)? It can flow 200 hp and is way less laggy compared to a TD04....

If I can find one cheap, maybe a great idea if I dont reach 200hp this August?blue thunder wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 9:53 am Why not go for a TD03-10TK3 (BMW N54)? It can flow 200 hp and is way less laggy compared to a TD04....

Re: 200hp 1200DP Turbo 'Challenger motor'
That is correct. The manifold has a double layer for insulation purposes, and is welded to the turbine housing. It is easy to cut off the turbine housing and make a flange or, even better, a V-clamp flange for it and weld it to the turbinehousing (you do need the correct welding material for that).
In stock application the engine makes 306 bhp and 400Nm of torque (from 1300 rpm to 5500 rpm) and that is all at just 0.5 bar of boost. With some simple mods (like intercooler, downpipes) and some tuning, 400 whp on pumpgas is not unusual. When pushing the limit on E85, even 500 whp is obtainable, but not very reliable at that stage.
The 10TK3 compressorwheel is quite large for the TD03 turbine wheel. Placing a larger compressorwheel on the stock turbinewheel does not really have benefits. Alpina tried it, but in the end, they stuck with the original 10TK3 compressor. In the Alpina configuration, the engine makes 400 bhp and 600Nm of torque. However, there are aftermarket turbine wheels with 9 blades instead of 11, which can flow slightly more and could handle a slightly larger compressorwheel. All in all a great turbo for smaller engines, as the TD03 will spool a lot easier and is very compact as well....

Re: 200hp 1200DP Turbo 'Challenger motor'
Sounds cool.
So the secret is the welding material , as welding cast iron is not easy.
And if you mate it with a steel or stainless v-band flange doesnt make it easier .
So what is the secret welding rod called?
The turbo itself is not very expensive in used condition.
TIA
Michael

Re: 200hp 1200DP Turbo 'Challenger motor'
The turbine housing of a BMW N54 is not cast iron, but rather a high grade stainless steel alloy. I have had very good results welding this material to different types of stainless steel (304, 310, 321 etc) using inconel 625 TIG filler rod.
