Lord Bajamungus build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Yeah, but you've been working on VW's. You guys just have more than me, although about the same per capita, lol.

I'm liking the dash plans, I'm making plans of my own as you talk yours through.

Here's the latest on the dash. I moved everything away from the right side of the GPS so I could see all the switches and labels while buckled in (hopefully). I don't have my seats in but I think this is close. I am tempted to get the cage and seats done before finalizing the dash because of this.

I tried to simulate my driving position in this pic.

I also swapped the main hoop on the cage around. It either sits in front of or behind the B pillar depending on which way it sits, but doesn't affect the fit of the front hoop or rear bars. Any suggestions on which way makes more sense? Obviously if it's further back it makes getting in and out a little easier depending upon how and where the seats are mounted.

Keep the b pillar back as much as reasonable. I'm short and my comfy spot is pretty far back.

Loving the dash... And the progress! is that steel? Are you going to weld in or rivet?

OK, that's what I thought, but after that pic you sent me I had to try it both ways. Wow, that sounds weird.

Yep, steel. Haven't totally decided as I'm not against a removable dash, but I'll probably just weld it in.

You know don't you that as soon as you weld it in you will need to get behind it for some trivial reason. Crawling up under the dash to scope or work on something is not always a lot of fun either. (opinion) Put some threaded inserts in and go from there.

Don't forget to seal around the edges of the dash when you install it whether you weld it or bolt it or rivet it. Welding all around would turn the cowl into a pretzel for window glass.

Dusty, doesn't that dash look about right size to blanket press into sunken gauges :) (snicker) One of these days I am going to do it just to see if I can.

Yeah. I'm far more into racing than customizing, but long ago when I was working with composites I thought about making a VW dash with carbon or kevlar face and with the face set back into the trunk area a little and at an angle so the gauge faces were aimed directly at the driver's face.

Will I do it...probably not.

Deep set gauges can take care of some of the glare you can get... or not. My Suzuki has gauges set pretty deep.

I think these are really cool. Bezeled, blinking, labeled and colored as you choose, and BIG. All the parts at Pacific Customs, maybe $40 per indicator, but probably very worth it.
