My Chenowth Update - A Build/Mod Thread

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Orderd up rear wheel bearings today. Started the discussion with Dave Brown about conversion plates. Progress from this point forward shall be slow I suspect. Shooting for being up and running again by May. That's six months from now. Let's see if the wife allows it to be.

Removed rear brakes, rear arms and bearings. Mocked up one of the Chenowth arms. Funny how the Chenowth arms' bump stop perches line right up with the bump stop mounts on my Chenowth. Funny how that works. Anyway, its becoming clear my rear-rear 12" shocks aren't going to fit. That's a bummer in some ways. They are only 2.0 bodies, but they have 7/8 shafts and 2.5 big rezies and I wanted to keep them until the day I could afford some bypasses. I'm going to need 14" rear-rear shocks. Looks like 12" coilovers will do the trick for the front-rear shocks. Mr. Brown has started building my c/o conversion plates, so looking forward to those for sure. Ordered new rear bearings. Need to get the back end back into roller status so I can move on to the front. If anyone knows of a source for 10 3/4" to 12" x 3/4"-ish (.810) rotors in the unheard of 12 x 6.25" bolt circle, lemme know. Need them for my Summers Brothers rear hubs (probably gonna have to use Wilwood 6 x 6.25").

Cleaned up one trailing arm and primed it (ran out of primer). Loosely mounted them up to figure out rough measurements for shocks and what-not. Removed trosion bars today too.

Here is a pick of Downtown Mr. Brown's C/O conversion plate. Its not mine, but gives you an idea where this is heading. Me likes:

Those are similar to the ones he made for my baja... they are well made and very stout.

Those pieces look bulletproof. Very solid.

Dave sent me a conversion plate to mock up with the trailing arm so we could figure out heim placement. Tacked up the mount and sent it back for the final fab'n. Man, he does nice work. You guys are gonna crap when you see the finished product. He also makes some of the nicest 3x3 trailing arms around in my opinion (I read those xmas wish lists kids).

Its a bit overkill for sure, but stopping should not be an issue....ever.

You did a good job, I am impressed again!
Lee

My opinion is worth slightly less than what you paid for it.
