jake,

sorry if i've missed it, but was there a ball park price for the rods? i wouldn't mind a set or two myself. i have a crank grinder here that can take down a 1.8 rod to a 2.0 rod for a decent price.

thanks.

How do you want to do that? The 1.7/1.8 rod is 124mm long and the 2.0 rod is 131 mm long :?

$280,--? That is a very good price! With today's exchange rate to the euro that is already less than for rebuilding the rods over here and taking off 125 gramms, but without better rod bolts!
These would be about 400 gramms lighter  (all my 2,0 ltr rods measured usually between 805-825 gramms stock).

I would say a very good deal! :D

Thanks,
Walter

Hello,

Wally, would that mean you will stop chasing after my rods?

But a very good deal indeed! Makes me think..... :D

Cheers,
Richard

Jake, how many do you need to make an order ? All 500 or less ?

wally,

i thought i read that if you grind the journals down off of a 1.7/1.8 crank, you would get a 2.0 journal and should be able to use 2.0 rods. like i said this is off of things i've read doing searches and stuff. hopefully i didn't read that wrong. :(

You CAN make the journel size the SAME as a 2.0L rod, but the length would STILL be 7mm shorter.....

Too short for a decent rod ratio?

And the oiling passages are wacky and don't feed the bearings worth a damn!

MANY Crank options are coming that have never been available before- Unless you bought one of my complete engines!

Lightened cranks
Non counterweighted strokers (lightened as well)
66&71 stroke cranks with TI journals
Ion Nitrided cranks

The list goes on..

SOON!

Sorry Bj,
Ronald informed me that the 1,7/1,8 ltr rods are in fact 127mm, not 124mm  I've just measured one... and he is correct.

Didn't understood you meant changing the rod diameter on the crank. Yes, that would theoretically possible by grinding down the crank from 55 to 50mm, possibly off-center. We understand this is what VW originally did when they created the 71mm crank out of the 66mm stoke cranks, but I understood from Jake that he doesn't advise this due to possible lubrication issues, not to mention that the crank must be nitrated again.
VW probably cross drilled them after they machined them. We don't have that possibility anymore...

Regards,
Walter

The factory did change the oiling passages when they offset the 66 stroke crank to 71mm...
