welding question

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Depends. Flux core wire is usually .035" necessitating the correct liner. What size MIG wire are you running in your machine? Wire can be anywhere from .024" to .035" (even bigger for industrial applications).
I don't always show my signature. But when I do, it's in this area.

Currently it is using .023/.024/.025. I also have some tips for .030 and I found a scuzzy old .035 and a new .035. I need to check the thread count as not all of them will fit a Hobart and its unusual thread count for the tips.

Thanks BD.

I never changed the liner in mine and had no problems.
Collecting parts again... No I'm not going to say why!

OK, for what it is worth I down loaded a manual for my welder and this is what I have been able to find.

The liner handles .024 to .035 but what I have to do it change the wiring of the gun from GMAW – Solid wire with shielding gas to FCAW – Self-shielding wire – no shielding gas; e.g., DCEP – Reverse polarity (Connect gun to positive (+) output Terminal. Connect ground to negative (–) output terminal) to DCEN – Straight Polarity (Connect to work (–) output terminal and Connect the work to positive (+) output terminal).

Thanks for all the help guys.

You know, my wife always tells me to read the damn instructions, but I never do... Glad to be in good company!

Lee- I was going to say that your liner is probably .035, and that you also need to switch polarity when going to flux core but you beat me to it. You will also need to change the drive rolls and the tip.

Whats funny is that I have now down loaded the manual twice before and put them away so I could find them and you know where that is... neither do I other than it is probably with the origional manual that came with the welder when I origionally hooked it up!

I think that I just have to flip the drive roll as there is a thin grove and a thicker grove and the thicker one must be for the shielded wire.

Thanks for the additional info as I didn't see it in the manual.

"New starter, battery and bearings".
Which bearings? Main, rod, wheel, steering wheel....?
I wonder if he isn't talking about the starter "bushing". I have heard it described as a "bearing" before.

I have had the hereafter on my mind more as I age. I know this, because every time I enter a room, I wonder what I was here after... The file structure on my hard drive is much the same way.

I just got both my computers back from the computer Dr. after being cleaned up because of a virus I got off a PC video game that my wife had bought at a reputable store. I was informed this has become a problem now that so many of the discs are being made off-shore so be advised. Luckily I didn’t have anything important on the computers.

I went to the welding store yesterday or the day before and got a 3# spool of flux core wires sized .030. He asked me if I had a .030 tip and I said yes but I was not sure if the thread count was for Hobart (I bought a package of tips somewhere else and later found out that the pitch is different). I said I had a .035 tip and it is the correct thread pitch. He asked the manager of the store if you could go up one size and the guy said: (probably which I am adding based on the tone of the answer which leads me to believe that it may or may not be a 100% of the time yes) yes, you can go up one size in tip. This is a for-what- it-is-worth piece of information.

I won’t be able to get on it for a while as we had a pretty good windstorm last night and I lost a section of fence. I hate digging holes, pulling out cement, putting in a post with new cement in this cold time of the year. That and my wife’s honey-do list got bigger with the moving out of her granddaughter from her other (inherited) house. Time for the young ones to get on with their lives; she just became a great grandmother by her youngest granddaughter this last weekend, her first. What does that make me… I’m still a schmuck I guess! 8)
