Newbie P_Vilefort here.

I have a '72 VW 1302S German edition that was in covered storage in Bavaria for about 39 years. It was purchased by an American serviceman stationed in Germany and he brought it to the USA (Florida) in 2015. Counting him, I am the third owner. The odometer reading now is 53,046 km. It is virtually rust free. It is also registered in Texas with year-of-manufacture license plates.

I am in the process of putting together parts to do a fuel injection conversion. Since the information that is available suggests using a Ford EDIS-4 ignition module to get rid of the distributor that is then configured with a 36-1 crankshaft trigger wheel. I wonder if anyone has tried to use the Ford ECU for the 4-cylinder Escort (1.9L engine) to operate the ignition. If the proper sensors are used the ECU should not be able to tell that it is a VW engine instead of the Escort. I purchased the book that explains all of the details of how the system works as well as all the wiring diagrams, etc. This is the book;
Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control: How to Understand, Service, and Modify : All EEC-IV Systems on Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Cars and Light Trucks 1988-1993 (

I have registered and activated the account. I put in two paragraphs of information only to have it all disappear when I hit preview and was told I need to reenter my name and password. All the information seems to be gone. Putting it all in again:
I have a German 1302S version 1972 Super Beetle made for the Home market. It has cloth upholstery, factory front disc brakes, 53,046 km on the odometer and virtually no rust. The most significant rust was found under the tar board on the floor for sound reduction and it was mostly on the rear floor behind the front seats. There is evidence water came in the rear window weatherstrip at some point. It was in covered storage in Bavaria for 39 years (1974 to 2013). It still has the OEM flexible brake hoses date stamped Fulda 4/72. The stamping is pressed into the surface with heat. There are no cracks in the rubber. The rubber surrounding the engine is still intact. The heater boxes are rusty on the outside but have no perforations except where the exhaust connects to the muffler.

Investigating fuel injection conversion using Ford Escort pieces. Using book from Amazon [ Why you might ask. The ECU, new, was available on RockAuto without exchange for $84.00. Also got the coil pack new for $50. Picked up all of the connectors except for the ECU connector and I found a few throttle bodies in my area for about $50 used. The MAF unit/sensor is available new or maybe used will be cheaper. Will see.

I hope someone has done something similar to what I am comtemplating.

The reason EDIS was a popular choice was due to the crank sensor, control module & coil pack being a largely self contained system. If the trigger wheel is correctly aligned to the crank position & sensor, the EDIS control will fire the spark (wasted) at 10 degrees BTDC. The input signal then tells the module what advance to apply and can be managed via a very simple microcontroller (such as the Megajolt kit).

However advances in microcontroller tech means it’s not challenging to read the sensors directly & have complete control over spark / fuel from a single ECU. These can be off the shelf or open source kits like Megasquirt and Speeduino

Welcome!!!

As Bruce noted, the world has moved on as to EDIS: It was recommended at one point as that was (~20 years ago) the ~only way to run COPs on Megasquirt-1, maybe even early days of MS2..

Note that there is "megasquirt" and "MSExtra" firmware... Current MS3/pro/etc units ALL run MSExtra based code, and MS1/2 setups preferably should run msextra firmware, as the the original Megasquirt code has been obsolete for a decade or more.

When you read the docs, if it said "B&G Megasquirt" forget everything you read, as MSExtra uses the same hardware very differently in a lot of cases, and has far more options/capabilities. (B&G still own the mainboard designs etc)

We have a dedicated EFI and specific Megasquirt forum here, I don't think we have ever had anyone asking for help with B&G firmware, which is fortunate because no one here runs it AFAIK.

The easiest setup I have made is a modified distriubutor with a missing tooth wheel and Hall pickup. This supports full sequential fuel and spark on MS2Extra or MS3 setups with one sensor, and you simply twist it to get it running and set base timing on first run, then tighten it down and fuggetaboutit, subsequent adjustments are done via Tunerstudio.
(The distributor is just there for the pickup, use COPs or a CNP setup)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Hello STF.
After months of trying to gain access to the forums here. I have finally succeeded. Yea!

Names Perry, I go by 67rustaveneger on ts. So a few folks here will be familiar with me and to me.

As I learn the proper ins and outs of posting here. Things may move a little slow for me, and you at first.
I'll get the hang of posting here, I hope.

I'm currently building a 2276 MSII EFI, intercooled turbo engine for my 67 vw beetle.
The engine is in mockup on the stand in the garage.

I'm an amateur weekend racer and just enjoy getting out and meeting folks, of a like mind.

Anywho, I'm glad to be here and look forward to learning from the forums here.

Aloha, I’m Haiku Dude, living on Maui. I’ve acquired a 1963 single cab. I’ve always been interested in cars and my first was a 1969 VW Fastback. From there it was watercooled VW Rabbit then Golf. Switched to Toyota trucks and then Honda Ridgeline for dailys.
I’ve built 2 Factory Five cars ( Cobra replicas) but now I’m starting a new /old adventure !

Hi all!

I'm Igor from Maryland, USA. I have a '77 Westfalia and a '69 Beetle. The Bus does lots of camping duty during the year and the Beetle is a weekend driver and tinkerer. I'm currently building a 1776 for the Beetle (which is my first engine build and I already have questions!).

Glad to be here!

Hello!

I'm Dave from the middle of Oregon, USA. I just heard about this site today while looking for info on heim joint extensions for the linkage on the dual carb set up I have on my build kit from CB Performance.

I've always loved bugs since I was a teen. I could draw them from memory before I knew how to drive. In late 2009 I decided I was going to restore a car before I die and picked a VW because I figured they were the most straight forward of a project. I decided on a pick up body but knew I wanted a family at some point so thought I would be SOL because, at the time, I didn't know VW made a double cab pick up. But then I saw it after searching for them. I found The Samba quickly after that and started scouting, hoping that some day I'd have the money to buy one. At the time it was good enough to cruise the classifieds and dream. One thing lead to another and right before the pandemic hit I bought a family friend's 1962 Double Cab they had parked since the late 80s at 9500 feet in the Colorado mountains. Had it transported to Oregon and have been slowly working on it since. I just finished the engine build kit from CB I bought for it. I'm waiting on a drop suspension kit from WagensWest right now. Then it'll be on to replacing the electrical and the windows and rubber and repairing what rust there is. I have some knew body panels from Klassic Fab to put on, too. I can't wait to drive it.

I'm an idiot and learning as I go about everything by reading books and forum entries and watching YouTube. My favorite so far is Air Cooled Anything. Good guy out of the UK, check him out!

I hope to learn a lot from this site. Thanks for having me!
