Yes you do.

Yes you do. Also, when you accelerate the back of the car goes up and should be going down. Weight transfers to the front making it harder to handle. The lay down johnsons are supposed to transfer more weight to the rear under acceleration and I don't think you have any reason to notch the spring plates, but you may need to reindex the torsion bars. When you use the laydown johnsons I don't think you willget close to 3 inches. I did a lot of reading in the forums and talked with alot of different people, that I wish I had before I bought a couple reduxes I would have went IRS.

Looking at pics of the Zylla adapters I think if you notch the spring plates and index the bars you will not have a camber problem and still get 3" of lift. The reason I think this is since the axle tube is moved above the spring plate, by moving the spring plates down enough to bring the tubes back into the original posistion your camber would be zero. I can mock up a diagram if I am not making sense...
Also Couldn't you just make a plate out of 1/8" steel or something. Put three holes and a slot, bolt it to the spring plates then 3" down on the plate drill the array of holes for the redux boxes? I will whip up a rough diagram of that idea as well...

I don't want to turn this all into a pissn match...
Before going through all the engineering... check out the specs on german Commander Wagens and Things (181)..
I have run boxes directly bolted to spring plates.
Dang... wish I had more pix to illustrate.
We have both redux and 6 ribs... they're totally different ... totally different purposes.

Tim,
I am just at lunch and bored....This is what I came up with. I didn't know you could bolt the redux boxes straight up to the spring plates? I figured since everyone used adapters it was because the bolt patterns were different...

I do not remember if the direct to plate required bending the swing plates.
Somewhere I have the spring plates from a 60s chassis... unfortunately I'd have to sort my personal stash for a direct answer.

2nd thought is the hibbard book... I can't remember if they did a farm-fab or if they used johnsons.

I will flip thru the Hibbard book when I get home.
Looking at the Zylla adapter pics it looks like the track is widened as well. So my plate idea probably wouldn't work. Maybe I could just use a buttload of washers?

Sure... just make sure you also put spacer washers on the drums (instead of buying the mated drums) and wheel adaptors
(kids this is a joke commonly done when hacking up a bug with spare parts).

Does anyone know approximately how much wider the track is on the redux axles?

For some reason, I believe the space to make up is about 5/8 or so..
I could mesure my Johnson for you.

I'm aware my nuts are 36mm.. I believe the additional length used by the johson is only 1-1/4

Bugzilla's are 1 and 3/4 of an inch wide from the redux housing to the spring plate. Backing plate to backing plate on my 58 or 59 is 51 1/4 inches.

We didn’t get the 220v recep installed in a timely fashion. So my next window of opportunity to cut out the skid plates won’t be until Nov 5th.
