Re: Franz, the thunder pumpkin!
what about a nutsplitter? no not the angry girlfriend kind. the one I have heard of on the net and seen once in store, but never used. do they work on such small nuts, and would it even fit in the tight space?
that said, the screwdriver trick has worked for me on spinning nuts in other places, and we have a cutoff wheel if it comes to it. are these studs tapped all the way thru the boss? because I have replacment step studs from M8 to M6 if we need to drill and retap.

give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

yeah but can you access that stud from the top? this is an earlier style case, so 6mm studs

I vote welding the nut to the threads. Since this is a free spinning nut, not a frozen one.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

but i think the stud is part of the oil cooler, now that I am seeing it in my mind. we are talking about teh two under boss by the cylinders, aren't they swedged into the cooler or something? so you could basicly just grind the top side off and be done, just need a new cooler.

That's how it sounds to me.
Collecting parts again... No I'm not going to say why!

Yeah I assume it's part of the cooler and not the case (the stud), but I have no idea. Don't know how much another oil cooler would cost, but can't afford it anyway. Gonna make a wishlist over the next couple of days of things I'd like to get to have extra of, and things I need to get this working well again.
The hardest part of all this is just the snow. I can't do much with everything freezing up (including me). I'm gonna try to do some attacking with carb cleaner at the very least while it's stuck in the driveway, but I am not going to have time or money to work on this until spring break probably. I just hope one of those things improves by then. =( Also, the weather.

Early style oil cooler? You can have this one for the cost of a flat rate box.

Ok, I say do what you need to do to get that stupid nut\stud outta there. Which one is it exactly, can you show a pic? Don't forget I have a complete case with cooler, shroud and cooler mount up here if needed. if it is the case that is bad, I have a complete shortblock opened up for 92s (so I guess thickwall 90.5s as well but I have good 92 pistons in it now but one of the cylinders is junk) with a counterweighted crank and 110 cam that I could donate to the cause if it is needed.

In this picture it's the "top" nut that's stuck.
Get back to you in a few days. When I say I'm broke, I have about $20 free until my next paycheck (not sure when that is). Parents are covering groceries for now...

Oh, the one I have has the new style, like in the lower part of the figure below. Dunno if you can retrofit it but you are welcome to it and the matching shroud if it does.namelesswonder wrote:In this picture it's the "top" nut that's stuck.

Totally worth doing this instead, the later setups are better.Sneaks wrote:Oh, the one I have has the new style, like in the lower part of the figure below. Dunno if you can retrofit it but you are welcome to it and the matching shroud if it does.

That is what I thought but wasn't sure so thanks for the validation. From the looks of it, it should bolt up where the OEM one goes, right?
