Has anyone designed and installed an idler arm and pulley to keep the fan belt from leaving the planet?
Recently I have been shredding belts or they've turned inside out on acceleration. New machined upper pulley, new thru-bolt, proper shims and belt size.
The engine is a 2615 Type4, DTM, all the bells and whistles.

Paul,
I would say that the issue is simply the upper and lower pulleys are out of alignment. A few thousandths will cause this, it doesn't take much at all.
Some belts are also more of an issue than others. The Gates belt has been the one we have used with the best luck.
ensure those top and bottom pulley groves align perfectly and I'd say the issue will go away.

We did realign the upper and lower pulleys awhile back. It will be on my checklist again. What would cause the upper and lower pulleys to get out of alignment? Running great otherwise. 50-60 lbs oil pressure; 190-210 oil temps and two ticks below the 350 degree mark on the head temps
Had all the steel-bodied guys scratching their heads at the North Meets South show a few weeks back.
I particularly enjoyed the one expert that was holding court in the hotel parking lot. After a thorough examination under my car he pronounced to the onlooking crowd it wasnt even a Porsche engine, just an old bus motor.
I watched in silence and waited for the wine tour run the next day and worked my way through a lot of those little cars to get up behind his 61 cabriolet. I guess you know he has a new respect for old bus engines!

Paul, glad to heaqr you showed him who the boss is... Hell, his engine doesn't even have cam bearings! The 356/616 engine is a "Toy" compared to a TIV...
I would double check the belt alignment and ensure that the upper pulley is not just aligned with the lower but also that the upper pulley is adjusted the same horizontally. You can do this with two yard sticks in the pulley grooves of the upper and lower pulleys.
I'll be in Sacramento next weekend, if it's not too much of a drive bring the car and I'll see if I can fix it for you, or at least find the issue..
