Total Newbie To German Look, Please Help...

Post by Capgun_Slim »

I've always been a Karmann Ghia and Beetle guy. Slam the front end by throwing in an adjustable beam, and installing some dropped spindles. Then putting on the ole' 135's.

Then to the rear, up 2-3 clicks on torsion bars, cutting bump stops, then putting on the the trusty ole' 165's.

Some chromies with moons, porsche caps, or 5-8 spoke polished Empies and call it done.

Now don't get me wrong, I love this look, and have done it many times.
I just think now it's time to do something a bit different. Only problem is, I'm at a loss when it comes to what I have to do to get the German Look.

I'm mainly seeking The Look, not the fire breathing 2+Litre motor, or crazy brakes etc. I just don't have that kind of cash.

I have just acquired a 71' Super Convertible. I would like to basically know what kind of rims will fit in the 17" size, what size tire to use, and what I may or may not have to do to the suspension, and that's it. That's as far as I want to go into The Look. I would like to keep the stock fenders, and I DON'T want to convert to disk brakes.

Basically, tell me what I need to order. And show me some links to an assortment of rims that will fit.

From what I've been reading so far, it looks like I'll need new drums that are drilled differently, that will fit the rims I want. But that's as far as my knowledge goes into this new realm I'm in. Thanks in advance guys...

German Look

Post by effvee »

Hello, well if you are looking for the German Look I feel its the high horse power added to the Super Beetle.

And of course the German Look will address the many points of veiw.

If you rite now don't have the cash, don't limit yourself by making due. Because once you get really bit by the German Look bug, you will have to replace some things.

So first things first, your 71 Super will be reffered to as a 1302 model (flat windshield) Also your 1302 front struts will have the strut to spindle bolt pattern of three on the very bottom of the strut.

Take your time and atleast aquire the disc brakes. Please do the brake conversion first. You need to disc showing through the rims for the look 8)

If you convert to disc brakes, don't go out a get the solid rotors. The 1985 944 Porsche can be your platform for brakes. The rear brakes is a direct bolt on for your IRS trailing arms. And you can find them at the junk yard. The fronts will work but there are some parts you will need to exchange, such as the Struts. Conversion parts can be bought from www.Kerscher.de. They sell the misc parts such as parts needed for the rear parking brakes, and ball joints. You might want to join www.SuperBeetlesonly.com Superman the site moderator has the experience on SuperBeetles. www.germanlook.com is also another very good site. One of the newest sites a friend hook me up with is www.bug-talk.de it a German site and thoses guys have taken the 1302 and 1303 to vary high levels of speed and braking, plus a hell of a good looking bug.

Do you home work, send me your e-mail I'll send you some pictures of my work in progress. Good choice Peace :o
