HOLY COW! Drove Bill K's car today.

Post by fogey »

I talked to Bill K and Jake at the most recent Bugorama here in Sacto about the type IV approach. I subsequently contacted Bill and he came over to my house in that fine speciman of his today. First came my ride in his car and it felt like it could pull arms off of passengers and corner like a demon. Then Bill let me drive it. What a ride. Bill has done a great job of making one of these cars truly into what one of them should be. Jake has made the engine what it should be too. They both were extremely impressive. My car is a stock appearing restoration of sorts with a 2017 type I with 40mm Dells, Mallory, BAS exhaust, Webcam 163, CB crank, rods and heads mildly ported and port matched, engine dynamically balanced, in a "75 case. I thought the car ran good but I know Bill is singing the "milkshake song" you know, "Damn right, it's better than yours" Ha ha. Thanks a lot Bill and Jake, You've both made my day.

I think I'll be putting my order in next year sometime. Jake should owe some commission to Bill.

Bill and I have some things going on together and if they work out, he'll get more than a commission!

Trust me, all it takes is driving one of my engines to want one. I have had many customers call me up and order an engine after driving one, they were not even interested in the details- just getting it finished!

Its the most addictive drug on planet earth and it's legal!

Glad you liked Bill's engine, remember that its a 3 + year old combo and makes 30HP LESS than my strongest 2270 offering today, even the lowest performing offering makes more TQ and HP today!

I have had a 4 month hold on new engine shop customers, so we could have some time to get more caught up in the engine shop as the wait was at 10 months. I took the time to get back to speed and to advance some developments and things in the store as well as getting Married and traveling to Europe.. I'm going to start taking orders again on September 1- get ready!

Fogey - it was great to hang out today and go for a spin. I'm glad you had fun too. You've done a nice job on your super sleeper -- thanks for letting me drive it. It's been quite a while since I've driven anything other than RAT powered bugs and it makes me appreciate the torque even more. The difference in throttle response is considerable. With your engine building experience, you should have no problem with one of Jake's kits.

On my way home, I stopped to say hi to my neighbor, an old-timer who has raced motorcycles. He loves the car, especially the exhaust note as I putter down the street. He was curious what is going on under the deck lid, so I offered him a ride. He, like many, was stunned. "I had no idea a bug could do that!" A properly setup bug with plenty of torque is priceless.

Bugs have a Jekyll-Hyde personality (aka Herbie). On the surface they are simple, peoples car. But with the right combo and setup, they are evil and shocking. Few cars have this mystique.

It's great to own one your whole life, but even better to build one into a dream car with you own two hands and share it with friends.

Wrench on,
Bill

We talked about muscle cars on Sunday. I used to own one from '69- '72 and have been around them a great deal and I can say a good running bug beats them in the grins department ten to one every the time. Bug owners are lucky people.
