Rewiring Buggy - Build Up Thread

Post by The Wild Kids »

I am looking at re-wiring my buggy and changing some things around since I have to cut the top off now. Wanted to ask your opinions were on it. Should I do it all myself by going to the auto parts store and buying the wire and connectors? What gause wire would you suggest as well?

Should I look for a harness mostly completed and go that route?

For a woods buggy/sandrail I would say run it yourself. Look up delcity for material.

Any chance you can wait for just a few weeks.

1st OPINION .. do not buy the cheeeeeze ball $50 loom.. it totally bites.. mine has a constant short.. yes installed it correctly .

2nd OPINION -- pull your own wirewithout a harness.

Reason to ask if you can wait for a few weeks is that Bob2088 will be taking us through a build up. I'm volunteering with a couple of 18 year olds... we're planning a front to back wiring project that is running bulk quality wire.

Our commitment to Bob is to take tons of pix and give step by step instructions.

We do have diagragms and book suggestions.

Not a problem at all. Was thinking about doing something similar myself and take pictures. Sure you will do a better job than I could.

I just tore all the wiring out of my glass buggy. I will re-wire it from scratch breaking dowon the circuits the way I think they should be. I will also eliminated a lot of them. More relays and smaller amounts of things on a single circuit.

I also will change the type of switches I am going to use, sealed switches (sand/water tight covers and lockouts) and add indicator lights. I will not use the self lit swithes again. Cheap, and they don't like the sand and moisture.

If you do this, make a wiring diagram and photograph what you have done.

My opinion is worth slightly less than what you paid for it.

you might want to look into getting an 8 or 12 circuit prewired wiring harness. it might be easier for you. and it might be cheaper. i would look on ebay for it. IMHO i wouldn't buy bulk unless your going to run a very small amount of wires, the prewired harnesses are really easy. and i would run it through some kind of conduit too. just to protect it.

I just got a call from the young guys.. as it looks we're going to be starting "some" wiring this Sunday.

Bulk can be super easy especially for buggies etc.

For now to get my buggy running again, I want to use a push button to start instead of using a key again. How do you wire it for a push button starter? You have 4 postions on the back of the key switch, BAT, ST, ACC, IGN. But with a push button or momentary switch you have only three postitions. Can some one post a schematic or something to explain it for me? Thanks

power to one side of a toggle. other side of toggle is Coil acc and to 1 side of push button. other side of push button is to starter.

turn toggle on and then push the button.

Appreciate it 72bajaben. Going after parts tomorrow if I am lucky to get away for a few minutes. Just going to completely rewire everything, in the destruction stage at the moment. Going to see how MNAirhead and the crew do there and going to take pictures of mine as well. Have a few things that I want to clean up and get rid of twenty wires into one place. Thanks again.

72 bajaben, Did you use a fuse box or just straight wire it. I have had problems in the past with fuse boxes being the trouble spots from vibration and rough riding. I am just trying to keep things neat and not sure if it is going to be possible for what I want to do. Thanks
