Does the idiot light illuminate when you turn the key on and the car not running? Alternators require a "tickler" current and get it from that curcuit.

What does this mean??

Is there still a voltage regulator in the car?
Is the new alternator internally regulated?

Yes. It must work to cause the alternator to charge.
